School corporations receive ISTEP results

SOUTH MADISON COUNTY — The Indiana Department of Education released scores for the 2016 ISTEP recently, reporting that statewide 66.1 percent of students in third through eighth grades passed the English/Language Arts section of the exam; 58.9 percent passed the math portion of the test.

Students in the South Madison Community School Corp. collectively scored above state averages, while students in the Frankton-Lapel Community Schools scored below in one section and above in another.

Scores are important as they are used to measure students’ progress, rate schools and evaluate teachers to determine their pay.

However, administrators across the state expressed displeasure as results have been released too late into the school year and with little detail as to where and in what sections students performed poorly.

“The results are very late for us to really do much with them in preparation for this year’s test,” Frankton-Lapel Superintendent Bobby Fields said.

ISTEP is administered to students in third through eighth grades, as well as 10th-graders, each spring. Students in third through eighth grades take English/Language Arts and math exams. Some grades also take science and social studies.

Last spring’s test was only the second time students were given a more rigorous exam than they had taken in prior years, and educators said they’re still tweaking classroom lessons to help students better prepare for more challenging standards.

Despite the late release of official scores, Joe Buck, superintendent of South Madison schools, said his principals did receive preliminary ISTEP results earlier in the school year and were able to use the information for developing school improvement plans.
