NEW CASTLE — The Lapel girls golf team wrapped up a busy and successful first week with a win at the New Castle Invitational Saturday, Aug. 5.

Kristen Hobbs was tops by 16 strokes to lead Lapel to victory in the six-team tournament, following two strong team performances earlier in the week.

Hobbs shot a 71 (-1) to easily outdistance the 87 posted by New Castle’s Annie Gillock for the individual award. Junior Lauren Lutz came in with a 93, senior Bridget Mudd shot a 96, and senior Makena Mason shot a 109.

Freshman Sierra Campbell, in her first 18-hole tournament, posted the fourth-best Bulldog score with a 97. In addition to Campbell, the scores turned in by Mudd and Mason represented personal bests; Lutz was two strokes off her personal best.

The 71 for Hobbs also represents a personal best and, while 2016 graduate Natalia Campbell has the school record for low round at 69, Hobbs matched Campbell for strokes under par at -1.

As a team, the Bulldogs shot a 357, which was 44 shots better than runner-up Hagerstown.

The win followed a fourth-place finish in the eight-team Manchester Invitational Thursday, Aug. 3, which was shortened to nine holes because of rain. Hobbs was runner-up with a 40, while Lutz was 11th overall with a 46. Mudd shot a 53, and Campbell and Mason each finished with 58s. The Bulldogs shot 197 as a team, and Northridge was the winning team with a 177.

The girls opened the season earlier with an 11th-place finish at the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational. Hobbs posted a 72, good enough to tie for sixth overall in a tournament dominated by a deep field of Hamilton County players.
