Former PHHS volleyball star receives honor

TUSCALOOSA — University of Alabama junior and former Pendleton Heights volleyball star Quincey Gary set a school record and has earned Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks, for the periods ending Sunday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 10.

Gary is just the second player in program history to earn the honor twice in the same season and the first since 2008.

Gary averaged 5.83 digs per set with 70 digs in three matches the first week. Her 31 digs against South Alabama Friday, Sept. 1, is a University of Alabama record for most digs in a four-set match and represented a career-high for the 2015 Pendleton Heights graduate.

With 30 digs in a five-set win agaisnt McNeese State Saturday, Sept. 4, Gary became just the second player in Crimson Tide history to have two matches with more than 30 digs in the same season.

Gary then led the Crimson Tide in digs in all three matches in the Hampton Inn Bama Bash this weekend. She had 57 digs in the three matches, including 23 in a three-set win versus Hofstra Friday, Sept. 8.
