Lapel wins a pitching dual after dropping close one

INDIANAPOLIS — It was a classic pitchers battle between Lapel baseball and its Lawrence North opponents Saturday, May 19, but the Bulldogs prevailed with the 2-1 win.

Lapel pitchers allowed just one hit to Lawrence North batters during the game and scored one more in the hard-fought victory.

Connor Gill was credited with the win for the Bulldogs. He didn’t give up any runs or hits across four innings, striking out four and walking no batters.

Cameron Holycross, Ross Hagen and Ross Lord all put in work in relief out of the bullpen to nail down the win.

Lord recorded the last out to earn the save for the Bulldogs.

Lapel hitters managed three hits and two runs, just enough to get the win.

Mason Gilley, Satchell Wilson, Ryne Wheeler and Gill each collected a hit.

On Friday, May 18, Lapel watched its game against Alexandria-Monroe slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 3-1 loss.

Alexandria-Monroe pitchers struck out 11, while Lapel pitchers sat down six.

In the second inning, Alexandria-Monroe got its offense started when Rylan Metz singled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run.

Matthew Etherington earned the victory on the hill for Alexandria-Monroe. He allowed three hits and no runs in six innings, striking out 10. Trey Stokes threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Stokes recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Alexandria-Monroe.

Devan Frank took the loss for Lapel. He surrendered one run on two hits over two innings, striking out three and walking zero.

The Bulldogs totaled six hits in the game. Gill and Gilley each collected multiple hits for Lapel.

Lapel is slated to play Wapahani at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in Round 2 of Class 2A’s Sectional 40 at Frankton.

The winner advances to the championship game, scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 28, where it will face Shenandoah, Monroe Central, Muncie Burris or Frankton.

Pendleton baseball

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights varsity baseball won a Friday, May 18, home conference game against Delta by a score of 6-2.

The Arabians got on the board in the second inning and added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, two more in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Walker Stull was 2 for 2 with one hit and two RBI, while Kamden Earley made four plate appearances where he had two hits and scored a run.

Hunter Thompson also had a good night scoring a run and knocking one in.

Pendleton Heights is scheduled to play Connersville at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in Round 1 of Class 4A’s Sectional 9 at Mt. Vernon in Fortville. The winner advances to face either Anderson or Muncie Central in Round 2 action at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28.

The other Round 2 game, scheduled for noon Monday, will be between Richmond and either Greenfield-Central or Mt. Vernon.
