PHHS boys track team will be represented at state after finishing fifth in regional action, Lapel sends runner

INDIANAPOLIS — Several Pendleton Heights boys track and field teammates are heading to the state championship after turning in top performances at the North Central High School regional May 24.

Qualifying for the state championships are Matthew Sakeuh — 300-meter hurdles, 4×400 relay; Milan Jones — 800 run, 4×400 relay; Luke Upton — 1,600 run, 4×400 relay; and Eli Pancol — high jump, 4×400 relay.

The IHSAA State Finals for the boys is set for Saturday, June 2, at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, located at 1601 North Fee Lane, Bloomington.

Boys alternates for the Arabians in the 4×400 relay include Seth Ledford, Cole Buck, Payton Burmeister and Thomas Quiroga.

The North Central Regional played host to teams from the Decatur Central, Mt. Vernon- Fortville, Muncie Central and North Central sectionals.

The Arabians’ team earned 49.50 points, good enough for fifth-place out of 29 teams competing.

Pike finished first with 107 points. North Central was second with 85, Lawrence North was third with 54 and Ben Davis was fourth with 53.5.

Individually, Sakeuh finished first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.93.

Pancol jumped 6’4” in the high jump, a fourth-place finish, which was high enough among non-placers to qualify for state.

Upton was third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:20.29.

In the 4×400, the Pendleton Heights team of Sakeuh, Upton, Pancol and Jones finished third with a time of 3:21.13.

LAPEL

The Lapel High School Bulldogs also took part in the North Central regional, where they finished 16th with nine points.

Lapel’s Luke Combs finished second in the 1,600 run with a time of 4:18.66, earning a trip to state.
