Nature program set for Saturday

PENDLETON — Falls Park’s next Nature Program is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, at the Falls Park Office.

This month’s activity is Animal Charades, and the kids will be discussing the difference between wild, domestic, and tame animals.

Programs will be in two groups:

Ages 8-10 will be 9:00 am — 10:00 am

Ages 5-7 will be from 10:30 am — 11:30 am

Registration is limited and is costs $10 per session (cash or check only).

‘Friends’ seeks duck sponsors

PENDLETON — For the month of June, Friends of the Pendleton Community Public Library is registering sponsors for its Fifth Annual Lucky Duck Race at Pendleton’s Falls Park.

Sponsor donations greater than $100 will qualify to race a sponsor duck in the Lucky Duck race on Sept. 8 at the Heritage Fair.

Proceeds support programs at the Pendleton Community Public Library.

Art group adds to camp offerings

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Artists Society plans several upcoming art classes as well as an expanded art camp this summer at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Oil painting with Gini Deaton — 2 to 6 p.m. June 10. The subject of the painting will be “Christmas Rose,” which is a Robert Warren design. Participants will paint this floral design using a wet-on-wet old-world style technique. All supplies, including paint and canvas, will be supplied. There will be a step by step demonstration on a large screen with individual coaching. All levels of painters are welcome. Cost for the class is $95.

• Painting with Diane Burrell — 6-9 p.m. June 12,19 and 26. Participants will develop their own paintings. A still life to paint will be provided, or students may bring your their own photos or set up their own still life. A supply list will be available upon registration for the class. Cost is $15 per session.

• Clay Class with Kitty Myers (taking place at the art gallery’s clay center located behind Gaia Herbals Wholistic Center) — 1 to 4 p.m. June 12 and June 26. During this two-day class, students will learn to make a clay pot using coils. Cost for the class is $60 and includes all supplies. It is recommended people bring aprons. Day one will be used to form the pot from coils. It will dry for a week and then fired to bisque in the kiln. On Day 2, glaze will be applied and it will be fired again.

• Kids Art Camp at PAS — Pendleton Artists Society is accepting registrations for its Kids Art Camp. Children can learn and create art projects using a variety of media.

The classes will take place from July 16-20 and cost $50 per child. Cost for each additional immediate sibling is $45. Students ages 6 to 12 may register for either morning or afternoon classes.

The morning class is from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon class is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children 13 and older may register for the 5:30 to 8 p.m. class.

• New this year will be a metalsmithing and enameling workshop for ages 13 and older.

The class will make copper boxes with a focus on stamping, texturing, piercing with a jewelry saw, stone setting, wire wrapping and lacing, and enameling with powdered glass and kiln.

Participants will design their own style. All tools and supplies will be furnished. This class is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 16 to 20 and will be limited to 12 students.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Master gardener bus tour coming up

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a rain or shine bus trip on Saturday, June 9, to Springfield and Dayton, Ohio to visit Hartman’s Historical Rock Garden, Wegerzyn Gardens Metro Park and Cox Arboretum Metro Park.

The group will depart from the Anderson Meijer Store parking lot at 7:15 a.m. and return at 5:50 p.m. The cost is $35, which includes the motor coach, donuts, snacks, beverages and bus driver gratuity.

There are no entrance fees.

People will buy lunch on their own at Cracker Barrel or Arby’s. People should dress comfortably and bring any mobility aids they require.

Optimists golf outing set for June 9

LAPEL — Optimist Golf Tournament of Champions is scheduled for June 9 at Edgewood Golf and Event Center, 519 Golf Club Road, Anderson.

The Lapel Optimist Club event — which supports local youth sports, including football, basketball and volleyball — has a 2 p.m. shotgun start.

Church meal planned for June 13

MARKLEVILLE — The Christian Women’s Fellowship (C.W.F.) Comfort Keepers of the East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Markleville has scheduled its monthly God Abundance Meal from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, in the lower fellowship hall of the church.

The menu includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, rolls, assorted desserts and drink.

A free-will offering will be accepted.

The East Christian Church is located at 124 E. Main Street in Markleville and is accessible to people with disabilities. There will be carry-out available; shut-ins and small businesses in the immediate can have carry-out delivered by calling the church at 765-533-4996 the day of the meal or Diane at 765-533-2330.

Open Hearts, Open Purses coming up

PENDLETON — The awards night for “Open Hearts, Open Purses,” a giving circle comprised of at least 100 women who each give $100, is scheduled for June 14.

Open Hearts, Open Purses pools donations to award a $10,000 grant to one not-for-profit charitable organization that seeks to improve the lives of individuals and families in South Madison County.

On award night, donors will hear short presentations from three finalists then cast a vote for their top choice.

Interested women are encouraged to join the giving circle before May 31 to be part of the award selection on June 14.

Agency to help people grow their family tree

ANDERSON — The genealogy department of the Madison County Historical Society Inc. plans a session on land records beginning at 12:30 p.m. June 11 in the Bowman Room of the Madison County History Center, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.

The genealogy library has many resources available: More than 2,000 family binders; cemetery records for each township in Madison County; binders with information on war veterans from the American Revolution to present day; Anderson and Elwood city directories, which give the addresses of the citizens; church records by township of pioneer as well as present day churches.

There is no charge for the class, and reservations are not needed.

Future talks include “Census” on July 9 and “Computer/Websites” on Aug. 13.

Youth soccer camp sign up open

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights Youth Soccer Camp for boys and girls in first through eighth grades is open for sign ups.

The camp will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, through Thursday, June 21, at the Pendleton Heights Soccer Fields, One Arabian Drive.

Cost is $50, which includes a T-shirt and four days of age-appropriate training led by the high school coaches and high school players.

Cemetery ‘Friends’ seek volunteers — please run this one

PENDLETON — Friends of the Dr. Benedict Grovelawn Cemetery Restoration Project is seeking volunteers interested in receiving training on cemetery restoration.

Connersville-based Graveyard Groomers will be working at Grovelawn Cemetery June 25 to 28, and will provide training to local volunteers beginning at 8:30 a.m. June 29.

The plan is for those who receive the training to help restore cemeteries in their communities.

Group offers glimpses of past

ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society Inc., 15 W. 11th St., features a living room scene from the past, where visitors can see how an earlier generation lived.

There also is a dental office and general store, where people can see things they might have heard about but not seen.

The historical society is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
