Lapel Parks officials thinking about summer fun, need some help at Baseball Park

LAPEL — Summer fun for residents was the topic of a Lapel Parks Board meeting in June.

Board members discussed several topics, including the movie selection for the Movie in the Park night set for Saturday, July 14, which coincides with the 30th annual Lapel Village Fair.

The top two choices for the family-friendly movie were “Up” and “Sing.”

The movie is expected to start around 9 p.m. in Woodward Park, 1417 Vine St.

In other park board information, parks board President Bill Hutton said new seats for the swings at parks in Lapel are on order and hopefully will be in soon.

In other park business, work is progressing at the new baseball park, located off Brookside Road (County Road 950 West), but there is still a lot of work to be done.

The park — which is expected to have four baseball diamonds, a concession stand, shelters, a walking path and a playground — still needs some work on the dugout roofs.

That work is on hold until enough volunteers can be found to complete it.

Park leaders are hoping people or a community organization will step up and help with construction.

A concrete pad for the concession stand building has been completed, with construction of the building set to be done by Dennis Miller Construction.

Grass at the park also is looking better, park leaders said, but the parks board isn’t too happy with the number of weeds popping up.

Park leaders have spent all of the $200,000 in grant money they’ve received for the park and will be spending park budget money to complete the estimated $30,000 worth of work that remains.

Donations and offers of help from residents and local businesses are welcome, town leaders said.

Anyone interested in helping is asked to call the parks department at 765-534-3157 or email park leaders at [email protected].

In other park business, parks board members heard an update on the Splash Pad at Woodward Park.

The pad has a broken part that might cost as much as $6,000 to fix and needs to be sourced from Canada.

There is no report of how long it will take to complete the fix.
