Jamboree set for this weekend

MARKLEVILLE —Markleville Jamboree and Town Rummage is planned for Aug. 3 and 4 in the town park.

Friday, Aug. 3

11 a.m. to 10 p.m. — Booths open, rummage, crafts and sales; tractor show

4:30 to 8 p.m. — Psi Phi chicken noodle dinner and silent auction

6 p.m. — Opening ceremony, Markleville Cub Scout Pack 242; Dedication of “Hometown Heroes” Memorial Stones for John Holmes and Cecil “Red” Powers

5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Sign-up for baby/prince/princess contest (for children up to age 6); to enter, make a decorative container for money votes.

5 to 10 p.m. — Children’s inflatables; $5 bracelet good all night

5 to 10 p.m. — Greek’s Pizzeria pizza and beer garden

6:30 p.m. — Baby/prince/princess contestants announced on stage

11 a.m. to noon — Sign-up for pizza-eating contest at shelter (donation for entry fee goes back to jamboree)

Noon — Greek’s Pizzeria pizza-eating contest begins; compete or just have lunch. The contest winner, whoever eats a 9-inch cheese pizza the fastest, receives a trophy and one free pizza per month for six months. Categories are ages 12 and younger and ages 13 and older.

Noon to 9 p.m. — Inflatables open, $5 bracelet good all day; baby/prince/princess contest opens; tractor show, motorcycle show; free hay rides; Roseberry Coffee Café (iced coffee, sodas, blended coffee drinks, snacks and more); vendor booths open

Noon — tractor games in tractor area

2 to 9 p.m. — Sumo wrestling, $5 for two bouts

12:30 to 1 p.m. — Open stage, show your talent

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. — “Snakehead Ed” shows snakes from Africa, Asia, Australia, South America and North America

4 p.m. — Baby/prince/princess contest closes

3 to 5 p.m. — Studio 3 student bands, rock, country, pop. Members range from 10 to 15 years old. Four bands will play 20 to 40 minutes each. The last band, “Phoenix,” is comprised of high school students.

5:15 p.m — All baby/prince/princess contest winners announced on stage. Prizes for each child present.

5:30 p.m. — Winners for motorcycle show announced.

6 to 7:30 p.m. — John Beatrice, country artist

8 p.m. — Corey Cox, country recording artist from Markleville; bring lawn chairs

History group plans First Sunday Meeting

ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society’s First Sunday Meeting is set for 2 p.m. Aug. 5 in the Bowman Room of the Madison County History Center, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.

Anderson’s Chet Green will make a DVD presentation titled, “Civil War.”

The meeting is open to the public; there is no charge.

Parking is available in a lot across the street from the center.

Art society offers Bob Ross class

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans art classes regularly at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Wet-on-wet painting class — 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. Bob Ross-certified instructor Gini Deaton is offering a painting class for those wishing to learn to oil paint using the wet-on-wet technique made famous by PBS TV artists.

Deaton has been painting for more than 30 years and gives step-by-step demonstration and personal one-on-one instruction.

Participants will learn to paint “Copper & Lace Hydrangeas.” Cost for the class is $65 with all painting supplies included.

Students must bring paper towel and a 16-by-20-inch canvas.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

People can register during regular gallery hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, or by phone at 765-778-0986.

Quilters to discuss curve ruler

PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild will meet Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the Community Room at Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St., Pendleton.

Social time starts at 5:30 p.m., and the meeting begins at 6.

Special guest will be Vickie Smith from Quilt Expressions; she will talk about the creative curve ruler.

Colors will be yellow and turquoise blue. People are asked to bring fat quarters for a rummage event.

The guild meets the first Wednesday of each month except September.

Guests are welcome.

Quilt guild show coming up

MT. COMFORT — The 2018 Common Threads Quilt Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 10, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11, at Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church, 3179 N. County Road 600W, Greenfield.

Daily admission costs $7.

The show will feature more than 100 quilts on display, a vendor mall, the Quilty Friends Café and the Common Threads Gift Shop, which will have handmade items.

Ticket sales have begun for the donation quilt; proceeds will be given to Hancock Health Foundation’s “Women Helping Women” program.

Tickets cost $1 each or $5 for six.

Common Threads Quilt Guild meets at 9:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the church. Guests are welcome.

Flower show planned for park

PENDLETON — Pendleton Garden Club is planning a flower show on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Community Building in Falls Park, 299 Falls Park Drive, Pendleton.

This year’s theme is “At the Fair,” and the public is invited to enter horticulture items or designs.

The show will be open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.

Organizers seek Heritage Fair vendors

PENDLETON — Pendleton Fall Creek Heritage Fair takes place Sept. 7-8 at Falls Park.

The Heritage Fair, in its 44th year, is arranged by the Century and a Half Club. The fair serves as a major fundraiser for the club, which typically clears about $6,500 from vendor fees for community causes, including high school scholarships and donations to several organizations, including police and fire departments, Pendleton Community Public Library, local parks and more.

Festivities run from 9 a.m. to dusk Sept. 7, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8, in Falls Park.

Vendors sell a wide range of merchandise, from individually made items, such as turned wood items, jewelry and artwork, to food items, such as beef jerky.

Traditional food options include Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority chicken and noodles, Pendleton Lions Club corn and Kiwanis K Burgers.

Quilts in the Park marks 37 years

PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild’s “Quilts in the Park” event is planned for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 6-8 and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at Pendleton Historical Museum in Falls Park.

Quilts to be entered in the show must be delivered to the museum between 1 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. No entry fee is charged. Quilts must have an attached fabric sleeve for hanging and must not have been previously displayed in the show.

Each participant may enter up to two quilts in each category: Bed, all techniques, hand-quilted; bed, pieced, machine-quilted; bed, appliqué, machine-quilted; wall, all techniques, machine- or hand-quilted; art, all techniques, machine- or hand-quilted; miscellan-eous quilted items; and theme “Let’s Go Crazy” items, any technique and size.

Recognition will be given on the last day of the show to the quilt receiving the most Viewer’s Choice votes.

Quilts must be claimed between 5 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.

Swim lessons planned at Brown pool

PENDLETON — The DiveIn! 2 Swim: Every Child Can Swim Initiative is planned for this summer at Alvin D. Brown Memorial Swimming Pool in Pendleton.

Children 4 and older who live in Fall Creek, Green, Adams or Stonybrook townships and whose families cannot af-

ford to pay for lessons are eligible for free lessons with certified instructors this summer at the pool in Pendleton.

Lessons are one hour per day — 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. — for one week, Monday to Friday.

The program is funded through community donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, such as the Open Heart Open Purses program at South Madison Community Foundation.
