Library offers children, teen and adult porgrams

PENDLETON — Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St., has the following programs planned for most age groups.

Children’s Programs

• Storytime (ages 3-7) — 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21

• ToddlerTime (birth to age 3) — 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, Wednesday, Aug. 22, and Thursday, Aug. 23

Book club sign-up begins Sept. 1

Look for some changes to the library’s book clubs.

• Grades 1 and 2 are able to join the Read Me a Movie Book Club.

This club will meet four times during the school year to read a story and watch the movie based on the book. Discussion will compare and contrast the book with the movie.

• Rocket Readers is for third- and fourth-graders.

• Page Turners is for fifth- and sixth-graders.

• New this year for fourth- through sixth-graders is a comic book club. This club will help students create their own comic books. The library has partnered with a local comic book artist who will lend his talent to help children learn more about the creation of their books. Beginning in September, this club will be open to 10 students and will meet twice a month for two months.

Multiple sessions will be available.

Harry Potter Breakout Room

Sept. 1 and 2. Space is limited

Registration for time slots will open Aug. 15.

Teams of friends or family members can work to figure out the clues to get Breakout Box open.

Pete the Cat Party

10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 22 — storytime and other surprises with Pete the Cat

TEEN PROGRAMS

Biblioteens Book Club4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28

This is the group for voracious readers. Biblioteens are teens who read anything and everything, and this month’s meeting is a special get-together: every teen attending will be able to obtain a free copy to keep of the club’s previous discussion books. There will be pizza and refreshments.

The Game Corner

3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Open to sixth- to 12th-graders

The gathering features a different game each week, with recent selections including Towerfall, Injustice 2, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Gang Beasts.

The winner of the tournament chooses the following week’s game.

ADULT AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

Pendleton Community Café

Noon Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Provided by LifeStream Services, the café provides hot, nutritious meals to area seniors. Meals are provided for those 60 and older and spouses, with photo ID. Donations are accepted but not required.

Reservations must be made at least one business day in advance by calling LifeStream at 800-589-1121.

LifeStream’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people at risk of losing their independence.

Senior Euchre Club

1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15

Euchre begins after the Community Café. No registration is required.

Author visit, book signing

6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9

Melissa Fraterrigo wrote the novel “Glory Days” (University of Nebraska Press, 2017), which was named one of “The Best Fiction Books of 2017” by the Chicago Review of Books. This publication was the monthly selection of the library’s Starry Night Book Club. The public can meet the author and take part in a book discussion. Books will also be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served beginning at 6 p.m., with the discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Fraterrigo’s fiction and nonfiction has appeared in more than 40 literary journals and anthologies. She is the founder and executive director of the Lafayette Writers’ Studio, where she teaches classes on writing.

Yarn Twisters (Rogue)

6 p.m. Aug. 14 (Study Room) and Aug. 28 (Community Room A)

Yarn Twisters is meeting through the summer months. There will be reserved space for anyone who wishes to gather to knit, crochet and socialize.

Participants are invited to teach and learn from each other. Experienced crafters willing to help beginners are welcome.

No registration is required.

Podcast Club, anyone?

6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 (Community Room B)

Similar to a book club, participants would meet each month to share and discuss podcasts.

People at this organizational meeting will discuss what such a club would look like, including how the club should be organized.

Yoga

9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25

Program provides an hour of relaxing yoga. This class is appropriate for all experience levels. Participants are asked to bring a mat or towel if possible. Offered in partnership with the Pendleton YMCA.

‘Screenagers’ movie screening

2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23

There will be a screening of the documentary “Screenagers,” an award-winning film that probes the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles about social media, video games and academics. “Screenagers” explores the impact of screen technology on children and offers parents and families proven solutions that work.

Following the film, Stephanie Nancarrow from the Indiana State Police will lead a discussion on related topics. Nancarrow worked at the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) as a family case manager for five years, specializing in sexual abuse cases during her later years. She is now a youth educator with the Indiana State Police and ICAC Task Force educating youth on social media safety.
