MADISON COUNTY — The Lapel Bulldogs girls golf team was on fire at the Madison County tournament Saturday, capturing the title 50 strokes ahead of its nearest competitors in a seven-team field.

The Bulldogs scored 351 on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Marion’s Walnut Creek Golf Club, while Pendleton Heights finished in second place with 301.

“We played really well,” Lapel coach Dylan Crosley said. “I told the girls that I wanted them to shoot under 375; well, they responded with their play, 351.”

Madison Grant came in third with a 409, Anderson was fourth at 438, and Frankton rounded out the top five with a 459.

Kristen Hobbs, Lapel’s top player, was the county medalist and led the way for Lapel shooting a 75.

Lauren Lutz shot an 87, while Chloe Renihan shot an 89, Sierra Campbell shot 100 and Lauren Thompson shot 138.

“Kristen was consistent all day,” Crosley said. “Lutz and Renihan both had season lows.

“These girls have worked so hard, and the team score shows.”

Hobbs, Lutz and Renihan represented the Bulldogs on the all-county tournament team.

Although the Arabians finished second, coach Hilary Slick thought her players had the talent to give the Bulldogs a real run for their money.

“I wasn’t upset that we didn’t win county,” Slick said. “I was disappointed that we didn’t give Lapel more competition.”

Slick said she felt her team had been playing well enough heading into the county tourney to have a shot to take the title from Lapel.

For the Arabians, freshman Grace Wiggins was the top golfer with a 94. Other scores were: junior Danielle Tinsley, 100; senior Courtney Dawson, 102; sophomore Ryann Norris, 105; and freshman Kaylee McKenney, 111.

Wiggins also made the all-county tournament team.
