FRANKTON — The Bulldogs used a balanced rushing and passing game to take down host Frankton 35-20 in Friday’s rivalry football game.

Junior quarterback Cole Alexander completed 13 of 28 passes for 172 yards for Lapel. He and senior Justin Engle teamed up for four touchdowns. Engle had five receptions for 79 yards.

Lapel got on the board early with a 43-yard drive to the goal on a 25-yard pass from Alexander to Engle. But Frankton answered with 6 and a 2-point conversion, giving the Eagles an 8-7 lead.

Frankton scored again in the second quarter, giving it a 14-7 lead with a little more than half the quarter remaining.

Lapel’s hard-hitting defense then forced Frankton turnovers to get its own offense on the field in good field position.

A fumble on a Frankton punt return, recovered by Lapel, set the Bulldogs up for a touchdown by running back Sparky Manis. A blocked extra point still left Frankton up by one.

Another Frankton fumble in its own territory allowed the Bulldogs back down the field, where Alexander found Engle for another score and again for the 2-point conversion. Engle scored again on the opening set of downs in the third quarter.

Manis racked up 83 yards rushing on 17 carries. Junior Josiah Scott carried the ball 11 times for 69 yards.

Senior Connor Gill also had five catches for 58 yards.

Lapel’s home opener is against Adams Central at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31.

The Flying Jets, like Lapel, are 2-0 for the season. In two games, Adams Central has scored 77 points while holding its opponents to 23.
