PENDLETON — Kate Cowger, a 2018 graduate of Pendleton Heights High School, earned a roster spot on DePauw University’s varsity soccer team.

Cowger will play for the Tigers this season as a midfielder/forward.

Cowger was a four-year starter on the Pendleton Heights soccer team. She earned the Newcomer of the Year Award and the Golden Ball Award as the team leader in assists. She was named to the first team of the Hoosier Heritage Conference and was a District Top Team Player Award winner.

She earned three HCC All-Academic team awards, and two All-Academic State awards. PHHS’s record was 48-21-2 over her four years.

A career highlight was scoring the tying goal from more than 30 yards out, with just two minutes left, to send a 2017 match against Mt. Vernon into overtime. PHHS eventually won in the shootout after the overtime — Cowger scored one the shootout goals — and the team earned a share of the 2017 HCC conference title.

Cowger also lettered four years in track and field, earning three more HCC All- Academic Team and two more All-Academic State awards. She was part of four Madison County championship teams.

She also was the Class of 2018 valedictorian.

Cowger played a third of DePauw’s initial intercollegiate soccer of this season, a scrimmage against Anderson University, won by AU 2-1. She traveled with the team to play at Centre College on Sunday in Danville, Kentucky. (Centre won 3-1.)

DePauw is an NCAA Division III school and plays in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Cowger was accepted in the DePauw Science Fellows Program and plans to become a neurosurgeon.
