KENOSHA, WISCONSIN — Eunice Mwonya is making the most of her college experience, and did significant work during summer break when most students enjoy down time.

Mwonya of Pendleton was one of more than 40 students from Carthage College selected to conduct research with faculty through the 2018 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.

Mwonya participated in a psychology project titled “Measures of Olfaction During Pregnancy” with Leslie Cameron, professor of psychological science.

Many women report their sense of smell is heightened during pregnancy, but there is limited scientific literature on the topic.

Mwonya was part of Cameron’s research team, which did a study on the sense of smell with pregnant women.

Students involved in the SURE program spent 10 weeks on campus doing original research full time with a faculty mentor.

Students who took part also received a stipend, on-campus housing, a meal plan, and a research budget.

Students and faculty mentors met weekly for lunch to discuss projects and present student progress.

In the end, students were required to write a project report and display their findings at a poster session for the Carthage community.
