LAPEL — Lapel boys tennis came away with a 3-2 win over the visiting Pendleton Heights Arabians Sept. 13.

With the score tied at 2-2, the deciding match — No. 2 doubles — went three sets and continued well into several of the junior varsity matches.

The senior duo of Ian Vipperman and Cole Metzger took the first set from Arabians juniors Evan Bobb and Nick Vetor 6-1.

But in the second set, Bobb and Vetor kept the match alive, winning the set 3-6.

In the third and final set, the Bulldogs rallied strong, took the set and determined the match with a 6-0 win.

“I think we had a little bit of a mental letdown during the second set, but they came out and took care of business in the third,” Lapel coach Justin Coomer said.

“It was close,” Arabians coach Royce Hammel said. “I thought that would be our shot was at two doubles. They gave them a run for it, and I was pleased with that.”

Junior Bulldog Jesse McCurdy kept his undefeated streak alive at 16-0 after defeating senior Walker Stull 6-0, 6-0.

Winning for the Arabians were senior Seth Moore at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1 and junior Kaleb Alumbaugh at No. 3 singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Lapel’s No. 1 doubles seniors Reid Ratzalff and Ross Hagen defeated junior Jackson McKinney and Caleb King 6-0, 6-1.

The Arabians moved to 6-4 on the season (3-2, Hoosier Heritage Conference). Four rainouts for the Arabians are unlikely to be rescheduled.

Lapel later fell to Westfield. McCurdy won his match, reaching 17-0.

Lapel traveled to Hamilton Heights Sept. 18 and Shenandoah on Sept. 19. Only two weeks of play remain until sectional.

Pendleton Heights was set to face Delta Wednesday, Sept. 19 (after press time) and Hamilton Heights Sept. 20.
