LAPEL — The Rural Garden Club of Lapel met Sept. 12 at the home of Karen Kilburn. Eleven members enjoyed an apple cake provided by co-hostess Bev Chase.

The roll call was answered by mentioning someone who inspires you and why. Songs were chosen that contained flower names in the title.

The door prize of a purple mum was won by Kitty Myers.

The sighting of a young eagle on State Road 132 and County Road 400 South was discussed, along with the migration soon of the hummingbirds.

New business was a discussion of membership numbers according to the club’s constitution. The club is at capacity if it continues meeting in the homes of members. Two members will move soon, so the new people who inquired about membership will be contacted to see if meeting times fit their schedules.

The garden tip was given by Jo Ann Fryback. Tips on forcing bulbs to bloom early spring made it sound easy.

The lesson was given by Jackie Stephenson. It was titled “Bird Watching 101.” She explained traits to look for in identifying birds. Some traits were size, color of legs, size of beak, caps and crowns, colors on stomach, place encountered, and markings on back and neck. Photos of birds found in Indiana followed with distinguishing traits explained.

The next meeting will be at Lou Whisman’s house on Oct. 10 with Charlene Hummel as co-hostess. Members are asked to bring paper products for the food pantry.
