MADISON COUNTY — Election Day 2018 is less than a week away, and Madison County voters still have several chances to cast a ballot without having to venture to the polls Nov. 6.
But if the goal of voting early is to avoid crowds, chances are that won’t be entirely possible.
“I’d say it’s like a presidential election,” said Mary Retherford, director of the Madison County election committee, describing the number of early voters as heavier than normal.
As of Tuesday morning, more than 2,558 people in Madison County had voted early in person.
Retherford said the office also had sent out 4,400 mail-in ballots and received back more than 2,689. It also mailed out 26 ballots overseas and to service members, with eight returned.
Madison County has 90,939 registered voters.
Early voting continues through Monday, Nov. 5, on the second floor of the Madison County Government Center, 16 E. Ninth St., Anderson.
Remaining early voting hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m. to noon Monday.
Voters must provide government-issued photo identification before casting a ballot, except when voting absentee-by-mail or traveling board. ID must: display the voter’s photo and a name that conforms to the voter registration record (name does not need to be identical); contain an expiration date that is current or have expired sometime after the date of the last general or municipal Election (Nov. 4, 2014); be issued by the State of Indiana or the US government. Visit madisoncty.com/ElectionBoard.html for more details.
Mail-in ballots must arrive at the election office by noon Election Day.
