PENDLETON — Pendleton attorney Bryan Williams withdrew from the human trafficking and pornography trial for Jeffrey P. Kramer, 48, of Pendleton, a couple of weeks before it was set for trial.

Kramer was arrested by Indiana State Police in April and had asked for a speedy trial. He later asked for a public defender. Williams, who had initially taken the case as private counsel, was appointed as public defender. The trial was reset for Oct. 29.

On Oct. 12, Williams filed a motion to withdraw as Kramer’s court-appointed attorney.

Judge Mark Dudley of Madison Circuit Court 6 granted Williams’ motion and appointed Thomas Godfrey as public defender.

Godfrey filed a motion Oct. 26 to postpone the trial. Dudley granted the motion and reset the case for disposition or trial on Nov. 21.

If the prosecutor’s office and Godfrey don’t agree on a resolution of the charges, the trial will go forward.

Indiana State Police began investigating Kramer in January after detectives received an anonymous tip about suspected child pornography, according to a press release provided by ISP in April. That investigation led to the filing of the 36-count indictment against Kramer after the probe led police to images of a girl under the age of 18 from another state.

Police said Kramer allegedly met the girl on an online dating site.

According to the document released by ISP, Kramer allegedly began grooming the girl on the Internet for a sexual encounter at a later date.
