Arabians girls swimmers pick up two big wins

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights swimming and diving teams took on rival Anderson at home Thursday, Dec. 13, with the girls picking up a 134-45 win while the boys fell 76-108.

The team of Lily Brooks, Grace McKinney, Emma Robison and Karly Riffey got things going in the 200-yard medley relay with a 10-second victory. The B relay of Maddie Oliver, Catherine Dudley, Emma Weflen and Ella Dixon finished second.

McKinney, Maggie Miller and Claire Wittkamper went one, two and three in the 200 freestyle. Robison and Jaima Link went one and two in the 200 individual medley. The 50 freestyle was another sweep by the Arabians, led by Riffey. Kaitlyn Wheetley and Weflen touched second and third, respectively.

Robison and Link finished one and two in the 100 fly. Riffey earned another win in the 100 freestyle, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer.

The lone Arabians diver, Reannin Donati, earned first place.

The 200 freestyle relay was won by McKinney, Wheetley, Link and Miller, with Miller having the fastest split despite having just swum in the 500 freestyle.

In the 100 backstroke, Lily Brooks, Oliver and Wittkamper touched first, second and third.

McKinney won the 100 breaststroke.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the A relay of Riffey, Wheetley, Link and Robison took home the blue, finishing first. The other scoring relay of Oliver, Wittkamper, Brooks and Miller finished 50 yards before the next relay.

For the boys, senior captain Cameron Kordes won the 200 IM going away and the 100 fly by more than five seconds.

Pyry Kurunsaari, a Finnish foreign exchange student at Pendleton Heights, earned a victory in the 50 freestyle.

Earlier in the week, the Arabian girls earned a win over Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Palestine 131-52.

The girls dominated the night, earning wins in all but two events. The all-freshman team of Brooks, McKinney, Link and Wittkamper led the way in the girls 200 medley relay, with the B relay of Miller, Dudley, Weflen and Riffey following in a very close second.

McKinney, Wheetley and Wittkamper showed the depth of their team’s middle-distance swimmers by taking one, two and three in the 200 freestyle. Brooks and Dudley were first and second in the 200 IM.

Other results: Diver Donati placed second; Dudley and Brooks finished one and two in the 100 fly; Riffey placed first in the 100 freestyle; Robison was first in the 500 freestyle; McKinney, Brooks, Wittkamper and Robison finished first in the 200 freestyle relay, while teammates Dudley, Ella Dixon, Wheetley and Link placed second; Oliver won the 100 backstroke, with Miller following by less than two-tenths of a second; McKinney and Dixon finished one and two in the 100 breaststroke.

The boys team also picked up a win against New Palestine, 99 to 86.

The Arabians started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Trevor Cobb, Kordes, Evan Fredericks and Cole Robison took home a victory by a full length.

Cobb took home four first places on the night, winning the 200 IM and 500 freestyle.

Other results: Diver Cayden Sisson won, scoring a new season high in the 1 meter; Kordes won the 100 fly and the 100 backstroke; Fredericks won the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

In the final event on the night, the 400 freestyle relay team of Cobb, Robbie Courtney, Kordes and Fredericks came from behind for the win.

Pendleton Heights swimmers travel to Richmond today, Thursday, Dec. 20, for the final meet before winter break.
