PENDLETON — Matthew Roberts was recently sworn in as Pendleton’s clerk-treasurer. He was selected during a caucus of the Madison County Republican party to serve the remainder of the term of the late Virgil Mabrey, who died in November.

Below is some biographical information about Roberts as well as responses to questions posed to him as he begins to serve a term that expires on Dec. 31 of this year.

Name: Matthew Roberts

Age: 39

Family: Wife Jennifer; sons Grady, 8, and Judd, 6; and daughter Grier, 4

Residency: Downtown Pendleton

Education: B.A. in organizational communication from Ball State University, 2003

Occupation: Jennifer and I own and operate Fall Creek Medical LLC. We are a healthcare distributorship that specializes in the promotion of ancillary services to physicians and hospitals for patients suffering from pain, infection, inflammation and addiction.

Civic experience: Before I became the clerk-treasurer, I was on the Pendleton Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Utility Rate Advisory Board and the recent Economic Development Committee.

Why did you want to be Pendleton clerk-treasurer? I wasn’t specifically seeking to be the clerk-treasurer, but I was pursuing leadership opportunities within the community. As a father of three small children, small business owner and resident of downtown Pendleton, I am invested in the continued success of this community. I believe that Pendleton is the best place to live and work in Indiana.

Jennifer and I moved here after she graduated from Ball State 12 years ago. We were attracted to the small-town charm, Falls Park and the historical significance that only Pendleton has to offer. We both want to maintain all of the unique characteristics that make Pendleton great but also prepare for growth that our community will undoubtedly continue to have. (Jennifer sits on the Park Board.) The future of Pendleton is very exciting, and I want to be a part of the decision making.

What goals do you have related to the position? My immediate goals have been to learn the duties and responsibilities of the clerk-treasurer. I have been blessed with an amazing full-time staff of three individuals who are truly experts in their field. They have made my on-boarding seamless. My ongoing goal is to be a servant leader not only to them but also to the community as a whole. The great news is that my late predecessor has left the town in great shape. I hope that I can continue Virgil (Mabrey)’s legacy, and earn the position through the voters’ support in the upcoming election.

Do you plan to run for clerk-treasurer after you finish your appointment to the current term, which expires at the end of this year? Why or why not? Yes!

Do you see yourself pursuing any other elected positions at any point in the future? Why or why not? Absolutely! As I stated before, I am invested to the continued success of this community and it’s been an honor and pleasure to serve the residents of this great town.
