Arabians fall to Golden Bears

PENDLETON — Foul trouble and missed opportunities doomed the Pendleton Heights boys basketball team Feb. 4. The visiting Shelbyville Golden Bears pulled off a 67-58 win.

The Arabians held a slim lead through three quarters and were up by 10 late in the third, but the Golden Bears, with the help of star shooter Zach Kuhn, cut the margin. A basket by Luke Asher put the Golden Bears in the lead in the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t really stop him (Kuhn),” Arabians assistant coach Dylan Wells said. “We didn’t know what to do. He was just making them. We tried to make him uncomfortable and shut him down, but he makes some tough shots.”

Wells said Shelbyville has other good shooters, and that made guarding Kuhn even more difficult.

Shelbyville extended its lead, but a foul and assessed technical on the Golden Bears gave the Arabians a chance to cut the deficit and turn the momentum back to the home team.

Down 61-56, Kuhn fouled Arabian Walker Stull and was given a technical for slapping the floor. Stull and Christian Jones went to the line to shoot, but all four shots missed the mark, and the Arabians’ window began closing.

Foul trouble in the third kept Tristan Ross on the bench for a time, and Ryan Noel fouled out after receiving a technical. The Arabians also were without Dameion Warrum, who is out with an ankle injury.

For the Arabians, Davrick Black had 21 points and went 3 for 4 from beyond the arc. Christian Jones was the other Arabian in double figures with 12.

The Golden Bears beat the Arabians on the glass, outrebounding them 32-20. Aligned with Kuhn’s 29 points and 16 Arabian turnovers, Shelbyville was able to capitalize and take home the Hoosier Heritage Conference win.

“We have to take care of the defensive glass, and that was the story tonight,” Wells said.

On Jan. 31, the Arabians played host to Yorktown and came away with a sound 70-46 win.

Three Arabians scored in double figures: Noel with 17, Ross with 14 and Jones with 13. Ross also had 13 rebounds in the game.

At 7-12 (2-4, HHC), the Arabians travel to Fishers Feb. 8 and New Castle Feb. 12.
