Gallery offers art classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans art classes regularly at Gallery 119, 119 W. State St. in Pendleton:

• Paint On Metal Mommy And Me Jewelry Class with Brenda Jarrett — 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. Participants will make Mommy and Me necklaces. All supplies are included in the $30-per-couple fee. The class is for children 5 and older, accompanied by a responsible adult. Class is limited to eight couples. Beginners are welcome.

Register during regular gallery hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, or by phone at 765-778-0986.

Show choir tickets on sale

LAPEL — The Lapel Show Choir and Jazz Band annual Cabaret in the Commons benefit dinner is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

Chef Scott Hersberger plans a menu of a salad, rolls, barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans and dessert.

Tickets are available from students in the jazz band or show choir or by calling the Lapel High School Choir Department.

The cost is $15 per person for the meal or $5 to attend the entertainment only.

Proceeds help support the South Madison Community Foundation and a dental clinic in Haiti.

‘Meow-a-thon’ event on tap

ANDERSON — Animal Protection League plans a ‘Meow-a-Thon’ adoption event at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Horse Stables from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 23 and 24 in recognition of Spay and Neuter Awareness Month.

The event will feature shopping, raffles and guest speakers.

Cats are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered and will be available for the price of a freewill donation.

Event takes place at Barn 17. Visitors should use Harrah’s Horsemen’s Entrance from Rangeline Road and follow Meow-a-Thon signs.

Cooking demonstion planned at library

PENDLETON —The learning kitchen at Pendleton Community Public Library, made possible through a South Madison Community Foundation grant, will feature the foundation’s Lisa Floyd at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

Floyd will prepare jambalaya and bread pudding as she shares the secrets of gourmet Cajun cooking with those in attendance.

Baseball clinic to start soon

PENDLETON — A Pendleton Heights baseball Spring Training All-Skills Clinic is set for Sunday, March 3, and Sunday, March 10.

It will take place in the Arabians’ auxiliary gym.

Kindergarten through second grade will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and third through fifth and sixth through eighth grades will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The cost is $45 for both days or $30 for one day.

Agency conducts photo contest

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (DHPA) seeks photos from the public for its annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest.

The division works to preserve buildings and the built environment and is looking for photos to celebrate that effort. Specifically the division is interested in photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved or desperately needs to be preserved.

The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. The image must show something that was designed and/or built.

Entrants should send an 8×10-inch matted image, with the registration form, by April 5.

Photographs can be color or black and white, and there is a separate category for digitally enhanced photos. For a list of guidelines and the registration form, go to dnr.IN.gov/historic/3994.htm.

Group seeks local history contributions

PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton Bicentennial Committee is accepting photos and information relating to the town’s past and present for a coffee table book called “A Celebration of Pendleton: 1820-2020 — Then and Now.”

The committee wants pictures and information related to agriculture, buildings, businesses, churches, local events, schools, transportation, and legends and lore.

The book also will have a patron section, which will be available for a charge to local businesses, churches, families and organizations. Those who buy a page or half-page will be able to submit photos along with a written history.

75th choral festival coming in March

ALEXANDRIA — A Madison County tradition continues in March when nearly 400 choral students from Alexandria, Elwood, Frankton, Lapel, Madison Grant and Pendleton Heights high schools gather together for the 75th annual Madison County Choral Festival.

The public is invited to the 350-voice choir concert at 7:30 p.m. March 5 in the Alexandria-Monroe Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.

Admission is $5. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

All day the students rehearse together in song and choreography to perform the grand concert that evening.

Professional guests working with the students for the day include conductor Kelly Ford from Siena Heights University; accompanist Reginald Rodgers from Anderson University; choreographer Kenny Shepard from Anderson University and Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre; and The Instant Classic Barbershop Quartet, guest performers.
