Artists society offers art classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans art classes regularly at Gallery 119, 119 W. State St. in Pendleton:

• Oil Painting With Katy Burke — 9 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. Burke will teach how to paint “Birds of Prey” in oil, an eagle and a falcon on masonite boards. Cost for the class is $55, including use of Burke’s paint and brushes. The fee is $45 for people who bring their own paint and brushes to class.

• Make a Copper Iris With Tracy Davidson — 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 10. In Davidson’s Copper Metal Work Class, students will make four copper iris flowers about 12 inches tall. Participants will learn cutting, texturing, riveting, brazing and patina, and all materials and tools are supplied. Cost is $50.

• Diane Burrell’s Friday morning “Coffee and Paint” classes — 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 8, 15, 22 and 29. A supply list is available at Gallery 119.

Cost for the class is $45 for all four classes.

Paints and brushes will be supplied for $10 if needed.

Burrell will teach how to paint “Sea Turtle” followed by a second painting of the students’ choice. Focus will be on color, texture and planning a color palette. All painting levels are welcome.

• Diane Burrell’s Tuesday evening classes — 6 to 9 p.m. March 5, 12, 19 and 26. The focus will be on composition from drawings, color mixing, contrast and surface textures. Students are asked to bring pictures or drawings to work from in class. This class works mostly in acrylic. Other media are OK. All level of painter are welcome. Students can bring their own supplies, or supplies will be provided for $10. Cost for all four evenings is $45. A supply list is available at Gallery 119.

• Diane Burrell’s two-day Enamel Cloisonne Workshop — 9 to 5 p.m Saturday, March 23, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 24. Burrell will lead students in creating a contemporary design based on Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass windows, including teaching how to fire on a clear base coat, create tension with cloisonne wire, wash enamels, wet pack and fire down gold and silver leaf, and stone and finish with a flash firing. Suggestions for setting the piece will be provided. The fee is $75 and includes all supplies.

Baseball clinic to start soon

PENDLETON — A Pendleton Heights baseball Spring Training All-Skills Clinic is set for Sunday, March 3, and Sunday, March 10.

It will take place in the Arabians’ auxiliary gym.

Kindergarten through second grade will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and third through fifth and sixth through eighth grades will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The cost is $45 for both days or $30 for one day.

• 2 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, at Fall Creek Christian Church, 1102 W. County Road 700S, Pendleton

• 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, Hoosier Park, 4500 Dan Patch Circle, Anderson

Agency conducts photo contest

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (DHPA) seeks photos from the public for its annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest.

The division works to preserve buildings and the built environment and is looking for photos to celebrate that effort. Specifically the division is interested in photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved or desperately needs to be preserved.

The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. The image must show something that was designed and/or built.

Entrants should send an 8×10-inch matted image, with the registration form, by April 5.

Photographs can be color or black and white, and there is a separate category for digitally enhanced photos. For a list of guidelines and the registration form, go to dnr.IN.gov/historic/3994.htm.

Group seeks local history contributions

PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton Bicentennial Committee is accepting photos and information relating to the town’s past and present for a coffee table book called “A Celebration of Pendleton: 1820-2020 — Then and Now.”

The committee wants pictures and information related to agriculture, buildings, businesses, churches, local events, schools, transportation, and legends and lore.

The book also will have a patron section, which will be available for a charge to local businesses, churches, families and organizations. Those who buy a page or half-page will be able to submit photos along with a written history.

75th choral festival coming in March

ALEXANDRIA — A Madison County tradition continues in March when nearly 400 choral students from Alexandria, Elwood, Frankton, Lapel, Madison Grant and Pendleton Heights high schools gather for the 75th annual Madison County Choral Festival.

The public is invited to the 350-voice choir concert at 7:30 p.m. March 5 in the Alexandria-Monroe Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.

Admission is $5. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

All day the students rehearse together in song and choreography to perform the grand concert that evening.

Professional guests working with the students for the day include conductor Kelly Ford from Siena Heights University; accompanist Reginald Rodgers from Anderson University; choreographer Kenny Shepard from Anderson University and Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre; and The Instant Classic Barbershop Quartet, guest performers.

Poetry contest to help literacy organization

ANDERSON — Submissions to the Poetic Earth Contest, to benefit The Madison County Literacy Coalition Inc., will be accepted through March 15.

People may submit up to five nature-related poems with a 32-line limit each. Previously published poems are acceptable.

The contest is sponsored by The Anderson Book Nook, www.anderson booknook.org

There is $1 per poem entry fee.
