Work in motion on town’s culvert projects

MARKLEVILLE — The work for two culvert projects is under way.

Markleville Town Council President Daniel Roseberry said Vectren has started working on its portion of projects located at Home Avenue and South State Street. Roseberry informed the council and those attending the March 25 council meeting.

In a late February meeting, Roseberry told the council Vectren’s work was expected to begin soon. The project includes the lowering of gas mains.

“It’s the biggest project we have going on now,” Roseberry said.

Weather will be a factor in the speed of the projects’ completion, he said. Once the Vectren portion of the work is completed, United Construction Co. will come in to do the building updates.

Abandoned properties

Town attorney John Reeder is reviewing a plan commission ordinance concerning abandoned properties in Markleville.

In February, the plan commission’s Christopher Cantrell presented a document to the council that would be sent to property owners of abandoned buildings. The document addressed expectations of maintenance and compliance.

“Before we pursue, we want to make sure, legally, we are doing everything the proper way,” Roseberry said.

The commission and council are looking into eight vacant properties.

Reaching the council

Roseberry encouraged any resident with questions about projects or other town-related items to contact him or fellow town council members Matt Gustin and Kevin Allen.

Meeting schedule

After having only one meeting in March, the town council will resume its regular schedule in April. Meetings are slated for the second and fourth Mondays at 7 p.m. in the town hall. The first monthly meeting includes an agenda in which town department heads give updates on projects or any possible concerns in their specific area. The second monthly meeting is a public forum.
