Giving circle seeks new members

PENDLETON — Open Hearts, Open Purses, South Madison County’s women’s giving circle, is seeking new and returning members in its 10th year.

Open Hearts, Open Purses is built on a model of attracting 100 members each year who will contribute $100 toward a pooled $10,000 grant.

The grant is awarded to a community organization following a member vote each June.

In its first nine years of existence, the group has awarded more than $120,000 to local projects.

$100 memberships will be accepted through May by sending a check to: South Madison Community Foundation, 233 S. Main St., Pendleton, IN 46064, or donating online at www. SouthMadison Foundation.org .

Jewelry, painting planned at gallery

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society offers art classes at Gallery 119, 119 W. State St. in Pendleton.

• Oil painting with Gini Deaton, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19. Instruction will use alla prima technique to paint a copper jug still life on a 12-by-16-inch canvas. All levels of painters are welcome to the class. There will be a break for lunch. Class cost is $60 and includes all supplies.

• Watercolor with Judy Crist, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 22. Using two images, participants will create a collage of water lilies and roses. Class fee is $50. See website for needed supply list. The class is limited to 10 students.

• Bi-metal earrings jewelry class with Tracy Davidson, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26. Students will learn forming with hand tools, texturing, soldering with a torch and creating ear wires. Class cost is $40 and includes silver, copper and beads. Class size is limited to eight and is for people ages 12 and older.

Teachers group plans spring meeting

ANDERSON — Madison County Retired Teachers Association will meet Thursday, May 9, at Anderson Country Club in Anderson.

Registration will take place from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

Following the plated meal luncheon ($15) and a short business meeting, there will be a presentation by Tom Mellish, executive director of the IRTA and Sudi Naraine, representing AMBA Services.

An optional tour of Primrose Retirement Facility, 1118 W. Cross St., will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Markleville church plans monthly meal

MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship (C.W.F.) “Comfort Keepers” of the East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Markleville have set 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, for its monthly “God Abundance Meal.”

The meal will take place in the lower fellowship hall of the church. The menu includes: chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, rolls, assorted desserts and drink. A free-will offering accepted.

The church is located at 124 E. Main St. (State Road 38), in Markleville and is accessible to those with disabilities. There will be carry-out available; shut-ins or a small business in the immediate area that would like carry-out delivered can call the church at 765-533-4996 on the day of the meal or Diane at 765-533-2330.

The next Abundance Meal is planned for June 12.

Garden club plant sale coming up

PENDLETON — Pendleton Garden Club is planning its spring plant sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Community Building, 299 Falls Park Drive, in Falls Park.

There will be many varieties of perennials, annuals and garden related items, plus baked goods.

Doctor offers skin cancer screenings

ANDERSON — Dr. David L. Martin plans skin cancer screening exams at no charge in his office at St. Vincent Holy Cross Medical

Screenings are offered as a public service for skin cancer awareness.

PENDLETON — Facial Pain Association Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Group plans a meeting for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Trinity Life Center, 5900 State Road 13 South, Pendleton.

Cruise-in, style show fundraiser May 19

PENDLETON — Pendleton Historical Museum is organizing its “Sunday on the Back Porch” car cruise-in and Women’s Style Show on May 19 in Falls Park.

The cruise-in is scheduled for 11 a.m. An area in the park will be blocked off.

The style show is set for 2 p.m. and will feature fashions from Ella June’s Boutique in Greenfield.

Pendleton Kiwanis will sell K-Burgers.

Proceeds will benefit the ongoing log cabin project in Falls Park.

Psi Phi Honor Flight Purse Auction

MARKLEVILLE — Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi will play host to its annual Indy Honor Flight Purse Auction at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at East Christian Church, 124 E. Main St., Markleville.

Proceeds will help support the chapter’s project to send local veterans to Washington, D.C., on an upcoming Indy Honor Flight.

Psi Phi’s auctioneer, Tim Looper, will auction off new and gently-used purses filled with surprises.

The auction will take place in the church basement. Purses can be previewed at 6 p.m. (no touching), with the auction starting at 6:30.

Cemetery workshop to discuss preserving

PENDLETON — A cemetery preservation workshop is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Grovelawn Cemetery Maintenance Barn, 537 N. Pendleton Ave.

Participants will receive hands-on experience preserving historic gravestones in the cemetery.

The workshop will be led by tombstone restorer John “Walt” Walters of Graveyard Groomer in Connersville.

Jeannie Regan-Dinius of Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will be speaker.

There will be a $10 registration fee. A brown bag lunch will be provided.

Artists Society offers Kids Art Camp

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society is planning Kids Art Camp for July 15-19 at Gallery 119.

Participants will work on various age-appropriate art projects culminating in a show of their work at the end of the week.

Cost for the camp is $60 per child ($50 per additional child in the same family living in the same house).

Class consists of the following sessions:

• Ages 6-12 — 9 to 11:30 a.m. (Limit 30 children)

• Ages 6-12 —12:30 to 3 p.m. (Limit 30 children)

• Ages 12 & up — 5 to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday (Limit nine children)

Registrations will be accepted only at Gallery 119 or by phone. (No online registrations.)

Fitness program starts Aug. 5

PENDLETON — EnhanceFitness, a 16-week arthritis management and fall prevention program, will start Aug. 5 at Pendleton YMCA, 520 Falls Park Drive.

This program meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays.

Outfitters seeks volunteers

PENDLETON — Outfitters, a non-profit organization that provides clothing to families in need in South Madison County, is in need of volunteers to help with its spring/summer shopping season.

There is a need for shopping assistants as well as for people to help restock clothes, sort donations and tag laundered clothes.
