Highway 38 Sale

PENDLETON — Mid-afternoon Friday, May 3, the first day of the two-day Highway 38 Sale, Madison County resident Larry McAllister said he was pleased with the pace of business so far.

“It’s worked out really well,” he said, sitting out front of a friend’s house on Pendleton Avenue, tabulating his sales — about 20 small purchases and one big one — $420 worth of mostly antique items. “It’s been great. The weather’s held out. It’s always iffy the first weekend of May.”

The sale takes place along State Road 38 from Noblesville to New Castle, and the Pendleton Business Association sponsors it locally. A section of Pendleton Avenue at State Street is closed to traffic, and there are booths and food vendors in the area.

Kathy Marcuson of Fishers came to town to shop the sales, something she does almost every year, she said.

A reporter spotted her at several Pendleton rummages.

“I love garage sales,” she said. “Bargains, bargains — you never know what you’ll find that you can’t live without.”

For many, such as Bob and Claudia Eley, who put just a few items out on a table at their Main Street home, and McAllister and Marcuson, the event is always a good time.

“This is my hobby,” McAllister said. “It keeps me out of trouble. It’s just fun.”
