BLOOMINGTON — Lapel junior Luke Combs took four seconds off his seed time and finished third in the state in the 1,600-meter run at the Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys State Track and Field Meet, Friday, at Indiana University.

Combs, who had the seventh best seed time at 4:17.85, ran a 4:13.70, finishing just .14 behind runner-up John Gillard, also a junior, of Bloomington South.

Cathedral’s Cole Hocker, last year’s runner-up, won the event with a time of 4:07.

Combs qualified for the state meet by placing third in last week’s North Central Regional.

As a sophomore, Combs finished 12th with a time of 4:17.72.
