LAPEL — The biggest news about this year’s Lapel Village Fair is the return of Grammy-nominated singer Doug Anderson, who hasn’t performed at the festival for three years, organizers said.

Anderson, a Lapel native who has enjoyed a distinguished professional music career, including earning a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association, will perform live at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

The two-day festival, arranged by Lapel Community Foundation and others, begins at Friday, July 12. Rummage sales in town are set to start at 8 a.m., and vendor booths on Main Street will be ready to go at midday.

“Everything opens at noon,” said Connie Sears, one of the event’s organizers. “They stay open on Friday, basically, as late as they want.”

Other highlights on Friday include a junior carnival for children ages 4-12, live entertainment, hot air balloon rides and a street dance.

Daylong activities get started early on Saturday, as booths open at 8 a.m. along with the start of rummage sales.

Other events in the morning on Saturday include a 5K run/walk and a car show.

The junior carnival takes place from afternoon to evening, with a parade set for 3:30 p.m. and Doug Anderson’s performance at 7 p.m.

The last event on Saturday is a Movie in the Park (Brookside Park) beginning at 9 p.m.

Organizer Margo Sink said she expects about 175 vendors setting up shop for the two days, selling a wide range of items such handmade crafts, art, jewelry and tasty treats.

Sink said people also will have a lot of food choices, including sweet corn, elephant ears, pizza, coney dogs and fried vegetables.

There will be a lot of music choice, too, she noted, with “live entertainment in the tent basically the whole time of the fair.”

While people visit and enjoy themselves, the money they spend is helping many good causes: the junior carnival benefits Robert L. Baka Memorial Scholarship Fund; the 5K event benefits CdLS Foundation, which helps people impacted by the rare genetic condition; and the car show benefits Lapel Food Pantry.

Any overall fair proceeds also help people locally, Sink said.

“Any money that we raise we put right back into the community,” she said.

Local organizations that typically receive funding include the food bank, schools, families in need and the fire department, she said.
