Art classes

planned at gallery

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society offers art classes at Gallery 119, 119 W. State St. in Pendleton.

• Portrait Class with Gini Deaton — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 18. Deaton will instruct a three-day portrait class showing how to paint a portrait from a photo. All levels of painters are welcome. Partipants can bring their own snacks/lunch.

• Portrait Drawing From Life with Rawlin Hodge — 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6, 8, 13 and 15. Hodge is offering a two-week class about how to draw the head. The cost for the class is $60. See website (below) for supply list.

• Oil Painting with Katy Burke — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. The subject will be a “Still Life With Pitcher.” Class fee is $55 with all supplies included. People who use their own paint and brushes pay $45. A masonite board is supplied to each student.

• Oil Painting with Palette Knife with Patrick Kluesner — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Kluesner will teach the basics of using palette knives to paint. The subject to be painted is “Roses in Glass Vase.” Participants must provide their own paints and several palette knives (see class list online). Cost is $40 per person.

• Jewelry Class, Love Bird Earrings with Tracy Davidson — from 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 25. Participants will learn to make their own “Love Bird Earrings.” Students will learn how to use a jewelry saw, texture, solder and make their own wires. Class fee is $40 and includes all supplies and tools. Class is limited to 9.

• Watercolor Class with Judy Crist — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 (with lunch break on one’s own). Participants will be shown how to paint a watercolor painting of a boat. The class fee is $50. Supply list is found on gallery website (below). Class is limited to 10 students.

MARKLEVILLE — Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi’s annual chicken noodle dinner is scheduled for 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Markleville Park Shelter House during the Markleville Jamboree.

The menu includes chicken noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans or applesauce, dessert, iced tea or lemonade.

The cost is $8 for people 11 and older and $4 for people 3 to 10. There is no charge for children 3 and younger.

The sorority will also offer a baked goods silent auction and a gift card tree raffle.

The park is located at 2649 State Road 38 west of Markleville.

Traveling show looks at Indiana literature

PENDLETON — Pendleton Historical Museum will play host to Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibit “The Golden Age: Indiana Literature, 1880-1920” from Aug. 3 to 25.

Drawn from collections belonging to IHS, the Indiana State Library and Indiana University’s Lilly Library, the exhibit explores what came to be known as the “Golden Age of Indiana Literature,” a time period in which Hoosier authors achieved both national prominence and popular acclaim.

The exhibit examines writers who contributed to the state’s literary golden age, but concentrates on the lives and careers of four individuals who loomed large during this period: George Ade (humor), Meredith Nicholson (realism), Booth Tarkington (realism) and James Whitcomb Riley (poetry).

Also, on Sunday, Aug. 17, local authors will be on hand to share their writings. Also on exhibit will be a collection of books written by other Hoosier authors.

Fitness program starts Aug. 5

PENDLETON — EnhanceFitness, a 16-week arthritis management and fall prevention program, will start Aug. 5 at Pendleton YMCA, 520 Falls Park Drive.

This program meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays.

Quilt guild to

discuss fabrics

PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild’s next meeting is set for Aug. 7 at Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St.

Social time is at 5:30 p.m., and the meeting will start at 6 p.m. This month’s speaker will be Gloria Stalhut, who will have wide backings as well as other fabrics.

At the meeting, members should return their entry forms for the upcoming quilt show. Forms will be available at the meeting.

The annual quilt show will take place Sept. 5 to 8 at Pendleton Historical Museum, Falls Park Drive, Pendleton.

The show is open — quilters don’t have to be members to display quilts.

Quilts are to be dropped off Tuesday, Sept. 3.

All people interested in quilting are welcome to the meeting as well as the quilt show.

The guild will not have a meeting in September.

Parks board plans public forum

PENDLETON — Pendleton/Fall Creek Township Parks and Recreation Board is playing host to a public forum at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15 to gain input on how the public would like to see the park system evolve.

Attendees will be able to share thoughts with the planning team; a presentation and live polling are planned.

The board wants residents of South Madison County to share what they value and envision for the future.

The meeting is set for the Community Building, 299 Falls Park Drive, Pendleton.

Park concert series continues Aug. 25

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights High School Marching Band and Madison County Band Directors will perform a concert at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 in Falls Park as part of the 2019 Concerts in the Park series.

The concert will take place near the park gazebo. There is no admission charge, and refreshments will be available.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs.

The series is sponsored by Pendleton Lions Club.
