Lawyer returns to Ingalls council

INGALLS — The person set to be the next member of Ingalls Town Council will not be entirely new to the group.

Madison County Republican Party appointed Scot Lawyer, a member of the council in the mid-1990s, to a seat that opened up after former council president Chris Bradshaw resigned at the July 22 council meeting.

Bradshaw, a Republican whose term expires this year, is moving out of Ingalls, which makes him ineligible to be on the council.

County Republican Chairman Russ Willis appointment Lawyer on Monday.

Willis said Lawyer was the only person to fill out paperwork for the position the past eight days, so he moved forward with the appointment.

“He has some background, and I thought that would be good,” Willis said. “Plus, he had already filed to run in the fall election, and I thought that was important.”

Lawyer’s seat and two other council positions will be on the ballot in November.

Council Vice President Justin Gardner, a Republican, and Democratic councilwoman Teresa Egerton were both appointed to complete terms that expire this year.

Democratic Councilwoman Georgia Parker was not on the council during Lawyer’s previous council terms, but she was a member of the plan commission during that time.

“He was very instrumental in a lot of things Ingalls has been able to do over the years,” Parker said. “I think it’s fine. He’s a Republican, and I’m a Democrat. That’s all right with me as long as he is working for the town and not for himself. That’s our job — to work for the town.

“That’s what he did before. I hope that is what we will have now.”

Willis is scheduled to swear in Lawyer at the Ingalls Town Council meeting on Aug. 12.
