‘Labor of love’

PENDLETON — Pendleton Garden Club recently presented Cathy and Jack Tudor with its Yard of the Month award.

“It’s a labor of love,” Cathy Tudor said of the gardens at her 415 E. State St. home on Saturday.

Tudor said she’s loved flowers all her life — something she partially attributes to her mother — and gets joy from tending to them on a daily basis.

“It just feels good,” she said, noting she usually spends about an hour each morning watering them.

The Tudor garden is comprised of a variety of annuals and perennials, with shade and sun impatiens forming lush borders and begonias featured throughout.

The Tudors have lived at the home for 35 years, Cathy said, and she has kept the gardens throughout that time — for many years with the help of her well-known next-door neighbor, the late Charlene Daugherty.

Daugherty, who died in 2012, belonged to many local groups and led local cultural, educational, charitable and beautification efforts.

“She taught me everything,” Cathy said.

Pendleton Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Community Building in Falls Park.
