Bulldogs face tough prospects in Raiders

LAPEL — The Lapel Bulldogs may be undefeated so far this season, and their Friday football opponent Shenandoah may be 1-3, but coach Tim Miller said tallying another win will not be easy.

“Shenandoah is still Shenandoah,” Miller said. “They haven’t forgotten how to play football there.”

The Raiders lost their first game of the season to Class 2A No. 1 Scecina and their second game to a highly respectable Heritage Christian.

The Raiders are coming off a win last week against Centerville.

The Raiders lost their starting quarterback to suspension, but junior Tanner Goff has stepped in and has almost 400 yards passing in the first three games.

The Bulldogs will also have to contend with junior Blake Surface, who has combined rushing and receiving to lead the Raiders in total offensive yardage.

Now at 3-0, the Bulldogs appeared at No. 10 this week in the Class 2A rankings. In the 20-15 homecoming win against North Decatur last week, the Bulldogs found themselves plagued with penalties in the first half but rebounded with few in the second.

“Hats off to North Decatur. They played really well. I thought we played well enough to win,” coach Tim Miller said. “Offensively, we can’t get all the parts clicking right now. Josiah (Scott) ran the ball OK. (Quarterback) Cole (Alexander) saved us a few plays doing what Cole does.”

On three different plays, Alexander broke tackles and avoided sacks to gain yardage for the Bulldogs.

“We have a lot of talent out there. We learn from it and try to get better,” Miller said.

Miller said the team had a few miscues with assignments in their young group of players, but he had praise for the defense.

“Defensively, I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

Junior Jarod Roundtree had two sack against the Raiders, and senior Teague Scherer blocked a field goal attempt.

“We ran to the ball well. We hit people. Roundtree, (Parker) Allman, Brandon Choate, Scott. They (Raiders) were getting pressured all night,” Miller said. “We’ve got to put all three phases together.”

“We’ve got to score more than 20 points. That’s not our game,” Miller said.

While the Bulldogs defeated Shenandoah 42-41 for the sectional title last year, Miller said historically the regular season against the Raiders hasn’t always gone well. “There’s a bit of a rivalry there.”

Kickoff against Shenandoah is at 7 p.m. at Lapel.
