PENDLETON — A Pendleton man was shot dead in his home Friday afternoon, and the Pendleton Police Department later arrested a man on a charge of murder.

Michael Beard, 112 W. Water St., Lot 3, was found by his girlfriend at about 1 p.m., Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer said.

He had been shot in the head, Farrer said.

Video footage from a camera inside the home didn’t capture the shooting, which took place in the bedroom, but did show a person coming and going from the home, giving police “an image of a possible suspect,” Farrer said.

Austin Frawley of Anderson was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. Friday at a house in Anderson, Farrer said.

“He listened and obeyed all commands and was taken into custody without further (incident),” Farrer said.

Farrer said a 9 mm handgun was used in the shooting; the gun had not been found as of Saturday afternoon.

Farrer said he and about a half dozen PPD officers, a Madison County Sheriff’s deputy and Indiana State Police were on the scene Friday.

Farrer said police did not know what led to the shooting.

Robert Good, who owns the property at 112 W. Water St., where there are seven mobile homes and a house on lots, said Beard was a good renter and a friendly guy.

“We’re kind of under a little state of shock,” Good said Saturday as he walked through the neighborhood making sure everyone knew what had taken place.

William Bennett, who has a home on one of the lots, said the incident stands out as the only such event in the seven years he’s rented there.

“This place has been nothing but quiet, other than in May when the tornado came through and tore the place up,” he said.

Bennett said he and Beard were neighborly with each other and that Beard was always polite, even calling him “sir” when speaking with him.

“He was very sociable to me, always asked if I needed help,” Bennett said. “We weren’t bosom buddies … but I know him and he seemed like a very nice man.”

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department website shows Frawley was booked at 11:42 a.m. Saturday on a charge of murder and is being housed at Madison County Detention Center.
