PENDLETON — The Pendleton Heights boys swimming and diving team has some experienced swimmers this season, but youth makes up the bulk of the roster.

Coach Mindy Hertzler picked up some seniors this season and a few freshmen to round out the 18-man roster. She is looking for her veterans to set the standard for work ethic and attitude.

The most experienced of the Arabians are juniors and include Oliver Claxon, who swims the breaststroke and the 200 freestyle. Trevor Cobb, who swims the individual medley, can use his versatility in all events, such as freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.

Junior Tanner Keesling will swim the distance events in the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Brayden Jones is the sprinter.

“He (Jones) does an amazing job and had a great sectional last year,” Hertzler said. “He’s tall and really coming on this year.”

Sophomore Tyler Hollendoller can swim anything, according to Hertzler, and with Jones’ speed, she believes the relays may be strong events for the Arabians.

Jones and Keesling were on the 200 freestyle relay team that finished fifth in the sectional finals last year.

Hertzler is aiming for a strong finish in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, but she sees Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon, Shelbyville and Yorktown as teams who will also challenge for the top spots.

“I think we’ll be competitive,” Herztler said.

She said despite the Arabians being in a very competitive sectional, she believes her team has the potential to do well.

“I have to help them understand that they can do it, too.”
