NEW PALESTINE — Pendleton Heights’ girls swim team scored more points than it did in last year’s Hoosier Heritage Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, but it just wasn’t quite enough to take the top spot, Saturday.

Greenfield-Central won its fourth-straight on the girls side, scoring 487 points. The Arabians scored 399, 11 points more than a year ago when they, again, finished second to the Cougars.

“Generally, we were pleased with the results of the meet, but we are aiming towards the sectional in February,” Pendleton Heights coach Mindy Hertzler said.

Lily Brooks had the top individual finish of the day, placing second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.50).

The 400 freestyle relay (3:49.80) team of Karly Riffey, Grace McKinney, Jaima Link and Emma Robison were runners-up, too.

Elayna Sisson was third in one-meter diving with 301.25 points. Robison added a third in the 200 IM (2:22.05) and in the 100 butterfly (1:03.43). Riffey placed third in the 100 freestyle (56.76). McKinney added a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:45.90).

The Arabians were also third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.81) with Kaitlyn Wheetley, Link, McKinney and Maggie Miller.

Greenfield-Central won its 10th-straight conference title in the boys’ meet, scoring 443 points. Pendleton Heights placed seventh with 152.

“We are not as deep or experienced as we are on the girls side,” Hertzler said. “We have some seniors on the team. Clay Britt and Nate Spencer are two of a few that have been doing a great job, but they are also first-year swimmers.”

Trevor Cobb was fourth in the 100 butterfly (59.53). The 200 medley relay (1:52.58) of Tanner Keesling, Oliver Claxon, Cobb and Brayden Jones placed fifth.

“Our aim for both teams, experienced and inexperienced, is to get them ready for the sectional,” Hertzler added. “Many of our new swimmers on the boys side will need to be contributors on the sectional team.”
