Pot ordinance could do some good

This letter is being sent in the hopes that our Pendleton council will implement the pot ordinance.

When I went to our school board a few years ago and asked that we have a moment of silence in our schools, I had no idea the flap I would take. It turned into a huge struggle. The bottom line ended up being that we had a school board that listened, heard and implemented the moment of silence. It took two years to fully start it at all grade levels. A few years later the state implemented a moment of silence statewide.

If our council would hold the line and pass the pot ordinance, it will — I promise you — give other towns and cities the courage to do the same.

There is a saying about follow the money. Medical marijuana will not be enough to feed the pockets of those who are intent on getting as many people hooked as possible on pot.

Will this ordinance cure the drug issues in this state or nation? No, but by standing up as an elected council you stand up for Pendleton town residents, children and the vulnerable, we will all be winners.

Bill Hutton and George Gasparovic should be congratulated for having brought this issue to our council. Beware of naysayers and their motives.

Patty Shelby, Pendleton
