Sheriff’s association offers scholarships

ANDERSON — Indiana Sheriffs’ Association offers scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies.

There will be about 40 scholarships of $750 awarded to qualifying students statewide.

Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship Fund was established for the purpose of receiving, investing and dispensing funds to provide college scholarships to students committed to pursuing an education and career in law enforcement.

Applicants must be Indiana residents, current members of the association or dependents of a current member. They must attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll full time (12 hours).

Applications can be obtained from high school counselors or at indianasheriffs.org.

Sons of AMVETS cookoff Saturday

PENDLETON — Sons of AMVETS’ Daytona Chili Cook-off is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Post 26, 939 S. Broadway St.

Cost is a donation to the Sons of AMVETS scholarship fund.

The post is a smoking facility. People must be 18 or older to enter.

County choral fest coming up in Lapel

LAPEL — The annual Madison County Choral Festival is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Lapel High School.

Choirs from Alexandria, Madison-Grant, Elwood, Frankton, Pendleton and Lapel will combine their voices during rehearsals in the afternoon and present a concert that night.

The guest director this year is Lamonte Kuskye. Also helping will be guest accompanist Reg Rodgers, choreographer Kenny Shephard and guest soloist Don Farrell.

Admission is $5 for adults.

Cabaret tickets on sale at Lapel

LAPEL — The Lapel High School Jazz Band/Show Choir “Cabaret in the Commons” is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, at the school.

Guests may arrive beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the music beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The two groups present music while guests are served a meal in a decorated setting.

The menu will include Italian roasted chicken breast, twice-baked potato casserole, glazed carrots, salad, rolls, dessert and drinks.

Tickets cost $15 per person, with the profit going to charity.

Tickets are available from any show choir or jazz band student or the school music department at 765-534-3036, ext. 5115.

Gallery Winter Art Show coming up

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans its Winter Art Show through March 4 at Gallery 119.

Dozens of works were submitted to the show, which was judged by Myron Cochran, a photography and jewelry teacher at Pike High School in Indianapolis.

Gini Deaton is the featured artist of the show.

The galler is in downtown Pendleton at 119 W. State St. Regular business hours are 11 to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Art classes planned at Gallery 119

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society offers art classes at Gallery 119, 119 W. State St. in Pendleton.

• Beginner Watercolor Class with Judy Crist — 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. This is a beginner watercolor class with all supplies provided. Crist will show the basics in a two-hour class designed to let participants try watercolors before they go to the expense of purchasing supplies. Class fee is $35. Take home a finished piece of art of a colorful “Red Bird.”

• All-Day Watercolor Class with Judy Crist — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 (with a break for lunch). Participants will paint a young girl on a beach. Cost for the class is $50. People should bring their own watercolor supplies and a 300-pound paper.

Leadership series adds monthly LABs

PENDLETON — The “Art & Science of Community Leadership” nonprofit education series is adding a monthly LAB session.

This month’s lab is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at South Madison Community Foundation.

Nonprofit staff, volunteers, or board members will receive expert guidance to improve their work and be able to spend time making hands-on, real-time improvements to their organization’s materials.

February’s Art & Science LAB will feature Keri McGrath Happe, who’ll help participants craft “tell me more” stories using their organization’s mission, vision, plans and key facts.

Giving circle plans member mixer

PENDLETON — Current and prospective members of South Madison’s women’s giving circle Open Hearts, Open Purses are invited to attend a member mixer beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20.

For $25, participants will sample teas from Sleepy Jean’s Tea Co., blend their own tea at the mixing bar, and mingle with other OHOP women.

Winter soccer clinic coming up

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights High School soccer teams plan a winter soccer clinic for boys and girls on Feb. 15, 22 and 29.

The clinics will be indoors at the high school, One Arabian Drive, in the new activity center.

Clinics will be divided by age groups and run by high school coaches and players. The clinics, for all levels of players, are designed to give participants a lot of touches on the ball and a lot of playing.

Players should wear tennis shoes (no cleats) and bring a ball if they have one.

There is no charge or registration; participants simply sign in each week.

Schedule: First to third grade, 1 to 2 p.m.; fourth to sixth grade, 2 to 3 p.m.

‘Active Threat’ seminar planned

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Anderson Police Department plan an “Active Threat” awareness seminar for churches and businesses of Madison County from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at Anderson City Auditorium, 120 E. Eighth St., Anderson.

Certified trainers from area law enforcement will provide information to the whole group and venue-specific information during break-out sessions.
