Choral festival at Lapel

LAPEL — Lapel High School will play host to the Madison County Choral Festival at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the school gym.

About 300 high school choir members from Alexandria, Frankton, Elwood, Madison-Grant, Pendleton Heights and Lapel will combine voices to rehearse in the afternoon before presenting that night.

Admission for the concert is $5 for adults.

The guest director will be Lamonte Kuskye. Guest soloist is Don Farrell, guest accompanist will be Reginald Rodgers and festival choreographer will be Kenny Shepard. Jeannine Terhune, Lapel choir director, is host director.

Music that will be performed by the entire group includes a contemporary gospel-style selection titled “There Has To Be A Song,” a patriotic medley named “An American Celebration,” a rhythmic piece titled “Come to the Music” and a bit of Latin music and dance to the tune “Mambo Italiano.”

The women of the choir will present “Everywhere That You Are.” The men will have fun with their version of “Sweet Caroline.”

Kuskye is choral director, music coordinator and musical theater instructor at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. He serves as music director at Pendleton First United Methodist Church.

Farrell is artistic director and co-founder of the Actors Theatre of Indiana.

Rodgers, retired from the piano faculty at Anderson University, teaches part time at AU, judges competitions and performs.

Shepard is an on-camera choreographer for Broadway Jr. and the Disney KIDS Collection of DVDs. He is an adjunct professor at Butler, Ball State and Anderson universities and directs, choreographs and performs with Actors Theatre of Indiana, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and Phoenix Theatre.

Cabaret at the Commons

LAPEL — The annual Lapel Music Department “Cabaret in the Commons” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Lapel High School.

The Jazz Band and LHS Show Choir will perform in an elegant setting as guests enjoy a gourmet meal.

The menu for the evening will be Italian roasted chicken breast, glazed carrots, twice-baked potato casserole, salad, roll, dessert and drinks.

The main course will be served by show choir members as the jazz band plays; then the jazz band members will serve dessert as the show choir performs.

This annual benefit raises money for an international cause as well as a worthy charity close to home.

This year students voted to have money go to Australia to help with injured and displaced animals and locally to the Dove House in Anderson.

About one-fourth of profits will be split between the two groups participating to help with upcoming trips as tips and fees.

Cabaret tickets cost $15 for the meal and entertainment. For those who want to listen to the music only from the perimeter, a $5 donation is requested.

Tickets may be purchased by calling the high school choir office at 765-534-3036, ext. 5115.
