MADISON COUNTY — To move on in their quests for sectional championships, Lapel and Pendleton Heights will need to do something they were unable to do in the regular season.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association had its annual draw Sunday, placing 402 schools in brackets for the 110th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament presented by the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever.

Lapel (14-8) will play Wapahani (16-4) in a first-round game of Class 2A Sectional 40 at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Alexandria-Monroe.

The Bulldogs lost to the Raiders 62-47 on Dec. 13 at Wapahani.

Six of the seven teams in the tournament have winning records. Wapahani is 5-0 against sectional teams, while Lapel is 4-2.

Lapel has won six of its last seven games, with the lone loss coming to Class 2A No. 1 Shenandoah. Wapahani has won five in a row and six of its last seven.

The tournament opens Tuesday, March 3, with Monroe Central (12-9) taking on Winchester (14-6). They will play each other in back-to-back games because they end the regular season Friday in a tournament preview at Monroe Central.

The second of two games on Wednesday will have host Alexandria (12-9) taking on Elwood (0-21), a team the Tigers have already beaten twice this season.

Frankton (11-10) drew a bye and will play Tuesday’s winners at 6 p.m. Friday, March 6. Wednesday’s winners will play at 7:30 p.m. March 6. The championship is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7.

Frankton is the defending Sectional 40 champion. Lapel won the tournament in 2018. Alexandria is also a defending sectional champion, winning Sectional 39 last year.

Pendleton Heights (8-14) will be in the same situation as Lapel.

The Arabians will need to avenge a regular-season loss to move on in their sectional tournament.

Pendleton Heights will take on host Muncie Central (8-13) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in a first-round game of Class 4A Sectional 9.

The Arabians lost to the Bearcats 75-59 on Feb. 11 at Muncie Central.

The Muncie Central Sectional begins Tuesday, March 3 with Anderson (2-20) taking on Mt. Vernon (9-11).

On Wednesday, March 4, following the Pendleton Heights-Muncie Central game, Richmond (15-7) will play Greenfield-Central (12-9).

At 4-0, Richmond has the best record against sectional opponents, with wins against Anderson, Pendleton Heights, Muncie Central and New Palestine.

Pendleton Heights is 3-3, with wins versus Anderson, Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon and losses to Richmond — in overtime — New Palestine and the Muncie Central.

Semifinal games will be played beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, March 6.

New Palestine (11-12) will take on Tuesday’s winner in the opener. The Wednesday March 4 winners will follow. The title game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7.

The Arabians are looking for their first sectional title since 2013. New Palestine is the defending sectional champion.
