Unbeaten Bulldogs, Arabians are on the road Friday

SOUTH MADISON COUNTY — Pandemic-related restrictions on and off the field may have slowed the process for Pendleton Heights and Lapel football teams, but you may not have been able to tell by the results on Friday nights.

Both teams are 2-0 and hoping to keep momentum going this week.

They are coming off similar victories from last Friday. Pendleton Heights dominated Madison County rival Anderson 45-6. Lapel did likewise against its biggest county rival, Frankton, 48-14.

For that positive stretch to continue, both teams will be loading up buses and heading out on the road.

Lapel (2-0) will head south to Greensburg to take on North Decatur. The Chargers, a Class 1A program, are also 2-0, with wins against a pair of schools in their classification, South Decatur (21-7) and Edinburgh (58-8).

They were 11-2 last season with one of the losses being a 20-15 decision to the Bulldogs.

Lapel could use some more big numbers like it had in the win versus the Eagles.

It was all Lapel from the beginning. The Bulldogs had a 32-6 lead by halftime.

Brennan Stow completed 12 of 20 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns.

One of the touchdown passes was a 96-yarder to tight end Parker Allman. Tanner Mroz had TD receptions of 60 and 57 yards. Both had more than 100 yards receiving on the night. Mroz had three catches for 134 yards. Allman had two for 100.

Tyler Dollar did the work on the ground, gaining 110 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.

Defensively, Lapel had 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. Mroz had a pair of TFLs. Jarod Roundtree and Ethan Hewitt each had two sacks.

It was defensive dominance for the second straight week for the Arabians.

After shutout victory against Mississinewa in the season opener, the Arabians gave up just six second-quarter points in the home opener against Anderson.

Pendleton Heights did the majority of its offensive work on the ground.

Luke Bays and Chaston Green each had two rushing touchdowns. Braden Gustin added another.

Eight different ball carriers combined for 300 rushing yards, led by Bays with seven carries for 123 yards.

Quarterback Luke Candiano was just 1-of-4 passing, but the one completion was a 21-yard touchdown strike to Tyler McKinley.

Evan MacMillan had a busy day on both sides. He tied Bays with a team-high seven tackles and also had an interception. As a backup to Candiano at quarterback, MacMillan scored a two-point conversion after one of the Arabians touchdowns.

Christian Roberts added 1.5 sacks. The team had four sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss.

Nick Taylor aided the kicking game with a field goal and four point-afters.

It’ll be a short trip on State Road 38 for Friday’s game against New Castle. The Trojans did not play a Week 1 game. It opened on Saturday with a 41-0 win versus Class 1A Indianapolis Tindley.

Pendleton Heights beat New Castle 52-7 last season.

The game will be the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener for both teams.
