Election board to discuss vote centers

PENDLETON — A Madison County Election Board meeting to discuss vote centers is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, in the Pendleton Heights High School cafeteria.

The purpose of the meeting is to receive public input and answer questions about a proposed plan to switch to vote centers beginning with the 2022 primary election.

“The election board will consider any concerns that are brought forward before we adopt an official plan,” County Clerk Olivia Pratt said.

The election board is comprised of Pratt, former Democratic County Chairwoman Ludy Watkins and Republican County Chairman Russ Willis.

“The Vote Center concept gives any voter in Madison County the opportunity to cast their ballot at any polling location throughout the county; no one is restricted to one polling place on Election Day,” Pratt states in a message to residents in the proposed plan.

The plan proposes 29 vote centers for Election Day and eight satellite locations for early voting two weeks prior to Election Day (in addition to the courthouse).

The March 17 meeting is open to the public. Attendees are asked to wear masks and follow social distancing protocols.

Lapel Lions to offer soup supper

LAPEL — Lapel Lions Club plans a drive-thru soup supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the Lions Building, 329 S. Main St., Lapel.

Lapel High School concert coming up

LAPEL — Lapel Show Choir will join forces with the Lapel/Frankton Jazz Band to present a concert at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, in the auditorium.

Previously, this was called a cabaret and took place in the Commons while a meal was served. Due to the pandemic, no food will be served.

Also, instead of charging a fee to benefit a worthy cause, this year there’s no admission charge, but attendees are asked to bring items for the food pantry and, if they so desire, leave a free-will offering when they leave.

Any money collected will be split between the two performing groups and used to offset expenses incurred because of the pandemic.
