‘Baskets in Bloom’ provides flowers

PENDELTON — South Madison Community Foundation is coordinating with the Town of Pendleton to decorate downtown with hanging flower baskets.

Since 2010, the foundation has partnered with local sponsors to support “Baskets in Bloom,” adorning decorative light poles on State Street and Pendleton Avenue.

Sponsorships cost $45 for new participants and $40 for renewals; cost includes signage to recognize the sponsor or spread a message of good cheer.

Gallery 119 offers art classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society’s Gallery 119 is offering art classes with a limited number of students.

The next scheduled class is:

• Oil Painting with Gini Deaton — 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 11. Deaton will instruct how to paint a family of chickens at an old fashioned water pump. Cost is $50 and includes supplies. Participants are asked to bring paper towel. All levels of painters welcome.

• Painting With Diane Burrell — 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 13. Participants will paint a flamingo in acrylics. Cost is $55 and includes canvas; $75 to include board and frame. All supplies furnished. All levels of painters are welcome.

• Jewelry With Tracy Davidson — 1 to 6 p.m. April 25. Davidson will teach how to create sterling silver, crystal, pearls and gemstone earrings. Participants will have many stones to choose from and can make earrings up to 4 inches long. Cost is $45 per person and includes all supplies and tools.

Pendleton Library ‘Friends’ to meet

PENDLETON — Friends of the Library will meet at 6 p.m. April 15 in the Community Room at Pendleton Community Public Library, 525 W. Water St., Pendleton.

The meeting will begin with a reception and special recognition of the “Dream Team” that helped build the Friends Lending Library in Falls Park.

People are welcome to come early to see the remodeled library, join in refreshments and learn about upcoming plans.

Swim club open to new members

PENDLETON — Pendleton Swim Club is accepting new members for the spring/summer season.

Tryouts are set from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 15 at the Pendleton Height High School pool.

Congressional art competition open

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The deadline to enter the 2021 Congressional District Art Competition is 5p.m. April 23.

The competition, which is sponsored by members of the U.S. House of representatives, is open to high school students.

Winning artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol and featured on house.gov’s Congressional Art Competition page.

The art competition began in 1982 as an opportunity for member of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.

Maximum artwork size is 26 inches by 26 inches and four inches in depth. It must not weigh more than 15 pounds. Paintings, drawings, collages, prints, computer generated art and photography are all acceptable. Artwork must be original.

OHOP grant up for grabs

PENDLETON — Open Hearts, Open Purses will again award a $10,000 grant to a local organization for a project specifically benefiting the residents of Adams, Fall Creek, Green, and/or Stony Creek townships of Madison County.

The grant will be awarded at a special presentation on the evening of June 10.

Tax-supported or educational organizations (parks, libraries, schools) and 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations are eligible to submit a request for funding.

Other entities — such as private, for profit, faith-based or grassroots community organizations or service clubs — may partner with one or more eligible organizations to propose collaborative programs.

Applications for the grant can be found at southmadisonfoundation.org/open-hearts-open-purses or upon request at 765-778-8444. The application deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, April 29.
