PENDLETON — Help from the No. 4 and No. 5 golfers was instrumental in getting Pendleton Heights its first dual match win versus Anderson on Monday.

Mother Nature cooperated at the Arabians’ home course as they defeated Anderson 178-201.

Cohen Gray shot a 42 to lead the team, while Bryant Davis had a 43 and Braydon Webster shot a 45. Sam Denny shot a 49, and teammate Lucas Poynter had a 48.

“Our one and three were a little off today,” coach Scott Davis said. “It was a rough day for those guys, but we did have our four and five pick up the slack, and that’s good.”

With the Madison County Tournament due to open May 8, the Arabians are getting better with each practice and match, according to Davis.

The course, Meadowbrook in Anderson, is one the Arabians have played before and should hold no surprises after playing the course on Wednesday before the Saturday competition.

“All of our guys have played this course over the years, but with five freshmen on the team, they are seeing courses they’ve never played before,” Davis said.

Three of those freshmen — Poynter, Sutton and Denny — are playing varsity.

Davis said he hasn’t spent a lot time score watching of the other teams in the county but rather has been preparing his team for matches.

“I’ve really been trying to get these guys ready for each event because we are so young. We’re going to go into it just like every match. We want to win the county. We’ll play our best and whatever happens, happens.”

Through invitational play this season, the Arabians have had respectable finishes. In single team matches, they’ve had to face perennially tough teams such as Noblesville, Yorktown and Delta.

“I feel we’re OK. We’ve got some good players,” Davis said.

And getting the win over Anderson was a boost to the team.

“It definitely helps. When you can have your four and five guys pick up the slack, going into the next matches and the county, it makes you feel good about that.”

Tee off for county at Meadowbrook is 8 a.m.
