Congressional art show starts Friday

PENDLETON — Congressional 5th District Art Competition is set for Friday, May 7, through May 28 at Gallery 119 in Pendleton.

The annual spring event, a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, is meant to recognize and encourage artistic talent.

The winning artwork from each district will be on display for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and also featured on House.gov’s Congressional Art Competition page.

This year’s winner will be announced during a First Friday event set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. The public is invited to attend.

People will be able to see entries at the gallery during regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Company to collect food for people, pets

PENDLETON — The Real Estate Pros, 6962 S. State Road 67, Pendleton, will accept food donations for people and pets in need from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13.

The firm also will do porch pick-ups in the South Madison Community School Corp. district.

Donations will be given to local community food pantries and animal shelters.

Outfitters Gala set for May 22

PENDLETON — Outfitters Inc., the non-profit organization that helps clothe children in South Madison Community School Corp., is planning its annual gala as a virtual event, including a “gift box of goodies” to help celebrate at home.

“The 2021 Benefit Gala may look different, but Outfitters Inc. still needs your help to help fulfill the mission of Clothing Children,” a press release states.

The gala, with a theme of “A Night With The Stars,” will involve streaming the event and interacting through devices.

The gala will include auctions, raffles, live entertainment and cocktails.

A silent auction begins at 8 a.m. May 17 and closes at 8 p.m. on gala night.

Gallery 119 offers art classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society’s Gallery 119 is offering art classes with a limited number of students.

The next scheduled classes are:

• Oil Painting With Gini Deaton — 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 16. Deaton and students will paint a Bob Ross oil painting called “Evening Seascape.” Class fee is $50 and includes all supplies. Participants are asked to bring paper towels. All levels of painters are welcome. Class size is limited to six.

• Watercolors with Judy Crist — 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22. In this beginner watercolor class, Crist will teach participants to paint a bird on a limb. Supplies are included in the $40 fee.

• Jewelry Class with Tracy Davidson — 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 23.

Davidson will teach participants how to make mix metal earrings, including cutting, texturing, forming and creating sterling earwires. Cost is $40 per person and includes use of tools and supplies. Class is for ages 12 and up. Class size limited to six.

Summer reading program coming up

PENDLETON — Pendleton Community Public Library’s summer program is set for June 1 to July 12.

The reading theme is “Tails and Tales,” and library patrons can participate virtually, using the Beanstack Tracker app.

There is a children’s program, a teen program, and an adult program.

People can register individually or with family members, and the app tracks everybody’s reading activity in one place.

Participants earn badges, accept reading challenges and win prizes.
