Highway sale draws the crowds

The streets in town were abuzz with eager shoppers on Friday and Saturday, looking for bargains and enjoying the fresh air during this year’s Highway 38 Sale.
Mary Ann Uberto of Anderson was out on the second day of the annual two-day rummage event — which stretches along State Road 38 from Noblesville to New Castle — for the first time.
“Just for fun, plus it’s my birthday,” she said, after making a purchase from a vendor in the parking lot of the F&AM lodge near Interstate 69.
Lori Pernod of Wabash said she, too, was using the sale for a social time, spending it with her sister from Middletown.

Story continues below the photos.

“Been out all day having a good time,” she said while browsing a sale on Franklin Street. She’d made several purchases so far during her five-hour spree that started at 10 a.m.
Her favorites were two enamelware pans. “I intend to plant flowers in them.”
Matt Houston, who was running a rummage sale with others on State Street west of downtown, said the event was a success, and that he’d heard from a lot of people that it was a great time.
On Saturday afternoon, Houston closed down early, choosing to head east, where there were vendors and food trucks set up along Pendleton Avenue, thanks to the Pendleton Business Association.
“We’re ready to go enjoy the festivities downtown,” he said, leaving unsold items on a table marked “free” and heading off with a group of people on foot.
Like Uberto, Morris Carter and Dora Bousman, both of Elwood, were at the sale for the first time this year.
They learned about the
sale on social media, too late to take full advantage of all the miles of rummaging available.
“If I’d known about it yesterday,” Bousman said on Saturday, “I’d taken off work (to come.)”
