LAPEL — Lapel Town Council’s newest member, sworn in last week after being elected at a party caucus, will participate in his first regular council meeting, set for 7 p.m. today.
Brian Robertson filled the council seat left open by former President Teresa Retherford, who stepped down at the September meeting.
“I just want to see what the town’s problems are, and see what I can do to help,” Robertson said, explaining why he applied to fill the vacancy. “Just be able to give my little piece of my knowledge to hopefully help better the town.”
Robertson is co-owner of a trucking and excavating company, Robertson Trucking LLC.
This is his first time serving in public office.
He was elected at a Republican party caucus on Oct. 10, where he beat out fellow candidate Roger Fouse for the open seat.
Robertson will serve the remainder of Retherford’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2023.
He said he plans to run for election next year to retain the seat for a full four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2024.
“I had already talked to him about that before he was elected for the open seat,” Madison County Republican Chairman Russ Willis said. “You can’t force anybody to (run in the future) because life things change, but it didn’t make sense for him to just fill in.”
Robertson grew up in Pendleton but has been a resident of Lapel for the past six years.
He said he hopes as a member of the town council to help be a part of decisions that improve the town going forward.
“I just want to help get the town to what it’s going to become,” Robertson said.
Due to fall break plans made prior to being elected, Robertson said he will be attending tonight’s meeting remotely, via telephone.
The meeting location is Lapel Eagles Aerie 4323, 110 E. Ninth St., Lapel.
