PH boys sixth, girls seventh at HHC meet

FORTVILLE — Pendleton Heights track and field competed in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet last week.

Both meets took place at Mt. Vernon High School, with the girls competing on Tuesday, and the boys on Thursday.

The boys finished in sixth place, while the girls finished in seventh.

At Thursday’s boys meet, the Arabians got top six finishes and points from Layne Richardson, Andrew Blake, Will Coggins, Benson Davis and Reis Schnepp to move their team total to 43.20.

Mt. Vernon won the meet with 166 points, topping Greenfield-Central (142), Delta (96), New Palestine (74.60), Yorktown (74), Shelbyville (17.60), and New Castle (8.60), along with the Arabians.

Blake had the top finish with a third place in the 1,600-meter race. Davis finished just behind Blake with a sixth place in the race, and added another sixth place finish in the 3,200.

Richardson was fifth in the long jump, and sixth in the 200-meter dash, Coggins finished in fifth in the 800, and Schnepp was top six in both throwing events, fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

On the girls side, the Marauders (124.5) completed the sweep, barely holding off Hancock County rival New Palestine (121) and Delta (101.5). Rounding out the team scores were Yorktown (84), New Castle (80), Greenfield-Central (63), Pendleton Heights (42) and Shelbyville (6).

Abby Fisher and Ava Jarrell both earned runner-up finishes for the Arabians. Fisher was second in the 400 with a time of 1:03.82, and Jarrell was second in both the 800 and 1,600 races with times of 2:22.62 and 5:04.97, respectively.

Whitney Warfel was third in shot put and fifth in discus, and the 4×400 relay team placed in fifth.
