BLOOMINGTON — Two area track stars closed out their seasons at the IHSAA Track and Field State Finals this past weekend.

Both Pendleton Heights’ Ava Jarrell and Lapel’s Cameron Smith ran their final races of the 2023 season on the biggest stage at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University.

Jarrell’s trip to the state finals was the second of her high school career. Last year, as a freshman, she placed 16th in the 800-meter race.

This time around, in a different event, she bested that finish.

In the 1600-meter race she placed 12th with a time of 5:05.49. Her regional time of 4:57.46 had her seeded fifth coming into the event.

Delta’s Nicole Southerland won the event with a time of 4:43.73.

Lapel’s Smith capped off his junior season with a 21st place finish in the 3200-meter with a time of 9:38.96.

He entered the race seeded 15th with a time of 9:32.19.

Carmel’s Kole Mathison won the event with a time of 8:53.18.
