Pressing paws at the market

PENDLETON — Alyssa Garcia-Gallegos brought her corgi, Zelda, to the Pendleton Indiana Farmers Market in Falls Park on Saturday to take part in the event’s inaugural dog parade.
Zelda attended dressed as a sushi roll.
She picked the costume herself, Garcia-Gallegos said, although Zelda’s method of communication is open to interpretation.
“I had four costumes, and this is the one she didn’t turn around and chew on,” Garcia-Gallegos said.
The parade started at about 10 a.m. near the main park entrance and ran through the length of the market.
It didn’t attract quite as many participants as hoped, market manager Karyn Ledbetter said.
There were four canine participants along with their owners.
Stephanie Buck brought Shelbie, a golden retriever/border collie mix, dressed as an astronaut.
“She’s out of this world, in more ways than one,” Buck said.
Stephanie Cifuentes brought Gavin, a Yorkie terrier, whose costume was of a different breed altogether.
“He’s dressed up as a dalmatian because I’m going as Cruella,” Cifuentes said.
Courtney Robinson brought Juju, a chihuahua mix, dressed as a bunny and sporting little sneakers.
It was hard to tell Juju was a bunny because “she just won’t keep her hood on,” Robinson said.
Regardless, it was an event Robinson said she knew she and Juju wouldn’t want to miss.
“It involved dogs, and I love dogs,” Robinson said. “I wanted to see how everyone was dressed, and she loves the farmers market.”
Ledbetter said despite the small turnout (no offense meant, Juju), the event will return next year to the market.
Saturday was the final market this season.
