Parks department offers talks
PENDLETON — Pendleton Parks Department employee Sheree Belt will lead a one-hour interactive program called Wild Edibles,” beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30, in Falls Park (group will meet in the parking lot at the Park Office, 460 Falls Park Drive.)
Participants will get to discover wild edibles on a hike through parts of the park’s Red Loop.
Group will discuss ethics and safety of wild edible hunting. People will not eat anything on this hike.
The presentation is part of a weekly series of interpretive programs about the outdoors that started May 2.

June 6
Wildflower Hike (1.5 hours) — A one-hour hike to discover what native wildflowers are blooming on the Yellow Loop. Meet at parking lot near the Community Building.
June 13
Beginning Birding Hike (1 hour) — A one-hour leisure beginners birding hike. People should bring binoculars if they have them. Meet at the Community Building.
June 20
Beginner’s Tree ID Hike (30 minutes) — A walk through the woods to learn about some of the most common native tree species and how to ID them. Meet at the Sports Complex parking lot.
June 27
*Marvelous Metamorphous! (30 minutes) — Learn the life cycle of butterflies with an interactive program. Make a butterfly to take home. Meet at the Large Shelter near the playground.
July 4
No morning programming as the park prepares for night event.
4:30 to 10 p.m.: 4th at the Falls! Event includes family- friendly activities, live music, food vendors and a firework show at the end.
July 11
Invasive Plant Hike (1 hour) — What does invasive mean, and why should people care? Participants will hike the Red Loop and learn how to identify some of the most common invasive species. Discussion will include ways to help keep the ecosystem healthy. Meet at the parking lot near the Community Building.
July 18
All Things Nature Hike (1 hour) — Group will make stops along the Red Loop to discuss different plants and animals native to the area. People should bring their nature-related questions to discuss. Meet at the Falls (near the Historical Museum).
July 25
*Batty for Bats! (30 minutes) — Discussion will include why bats are important to have around and some of the myths associated with them. Participants will make a bat craft to take home. Meet at the Community Building.
Aug. 1
National Wellness Month Hike (1 hour) — A hike to promote wellness. Group will hike the Green Loop while learning about Falls Park and its amenities. Meet at the Community Building parking lot. Most of this hike is accessible with paved walkways.
Aug. 8
Wildflower Hike (1.5 hours) — Group will hike parts of Red, Yellow and Blue loops to see what’s blooming. Discussion will include how to seed harvest in the fall to keep growing native plants in the yard. Meet outside the Community Building.
Aug. 15
Disc Golf for Beginners (1 hour) — Falls Park has an 18-basket disc golf course. People are invited to come out and learn the basics. Group will hike the course, and people will have the chance to throw the disc and try their luck at getting it in a basket. Meet at the YMCA parking lot.
Aug. 22
Nature Journaling and Hike (1 hour) — Spend time creating a nature journal. Group will hike on parts of the Red Loop to see what to add in a journal. Geared toward pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, but all ages are welcome. Meet in the Community Building.
Aug. 29
*Nutty about Squirrels! (30 minutes) — Indiana is native to four species of squirrels. People can learn about the different species and some tips to enjoying them and keeping them out of bird feeders. Meet in the Community Building.
Health fair planned for mid-June
PENDLETON — Madison County Health Fair is set for 3-7 p.m. Friday, June 14, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Community Sports and Wellness, 395 S. Heritage Way, Pendleton.
The fair will include screenings, classes and information, including basic health screenings, CPR class, cooking demos/class, and diabetes and weight loss resources.
There will also be a variety of family activities, including open-play gymnastics, children’s bike course, and tennis and pickleball demos.

Gallery offers art classes
PENDLETON — Gallery 119 in Pendleton offers a variety of art classes for children and adults.
The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.
Children’s class
A children’s art class takes place on the second Saturday each month. Each class needs its own registration.

Spring Art Show continues to June 5
PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society’s Spring Art Show is running through June 5.
Cameron Kotterman was the judge, determining first- through third-place winners. Those attending the opening voted on the People’s Choice Award. Cash prizes range from $20 to $70.
The gallery’s regular hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
American Legion plans activities
PENDLETON — American Legion Post 117,
611 W. State St., Pendleton, plans the following events — open to members and non-members:
Regular events:
All-you-can-eat wings — 5-8 p.m. Thursdays for $15 (or $2 each).
Lunch specials (as well as regular menu) — starting at 11 a.m. weekdays
Treasure Hunt drawing — 7:30 p.m. Fridays
Pool on Sunday — noon to 8 p.m., no charge
People interested in playing on a tournament euchre team or pool team should call or stop by the post and talk to Dave or Haley.
The Legion’s general membership meeting is 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month. Public is welcome.

Farmers market open on Saturdays
PENDLETON — Pendleton Indiana Farmers Market is open for the season, running from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays in Falls Park through September.
The market takes place between the main park entrance and John Street.
WEEM Radio Camp takes place in June
PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights WEEM Radio Camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon June 17-20 at the high school.
The cost is $75 for K-12.
Registration is open, and signup form must be submitted by May 18.

Purdue Club Scholarship Fundraiser
ANDERSON — Purdue Alumni Club of Anderson/Madison County is hosting its 30th annual scholarship fundraiser golf tournament on June 12 at Edgewood Golf course.
Each year the club awards up to eight scholarships to Madison County freshmen entering Purdue. The club has awarded $175,000 over the years.

This year’s scholarship winners will be recognized at a dinner following the golf. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and may be attended separately.
The club also invites area Purdue Alumni (and friends of Purdue) to become active in their events. Recently, it hosted a successful series of basketball game watches at Creatures of Habit in downtown Anderson and are looking forward to the upcoming football season.

Kids Art Camp starts July 8
PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society is taking reservations for Kids Art Camp 2024 at Gallery 119.
The theme this year is “Spread Your Wings With Art.”
The July 8-12 camp is for children ages 6-12 and youths 12 years and up.
Art is age-appropriate and taught by various artists during the week.
Children will display their artwork at the Friday Night Art Show, from 6-8 p.m. July 12 at Gallery 119.
Children may sign up for morning or afternoon sessions.
Sessions:
9-11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday (ages 6-12 years)
12:30-3 p.m. Monday-Friday (ages 6-12 years)
Evening: 5-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday (ages 12 and up)
Cost for the camp is $60 a child/$50 for a second child in the same family.

Donors can join Open Hearts, Open Purses
PENDLETON — Open Hearts, Open Purses (OHOP) — South Madison Community Foundation’s women’s giving circle — is open for new members.
It costs $100 to be a member. The first 100 donations fund a $10,000 grant for one community organization.
Additional donations are split between two other organizations.
On June 13, members will hear two finalists present their case for the $10,000 grant. Members vote to determine the winner.
A junior OHOP program is in place for members 18 and younger for a $25 donation. Junior members vote separately for who receives their combined donations.

Town seeks surveys on revitalization plan
PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton is in the early stages of submitting a planning grant application to Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to develop a new Downtown Revitalization Plan.
Planning grants are funded with Federal Community Development Block Grant dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The program aims to encourage communities to plan for long-term holistic community development.
