PENDLETON — A person was killed in a single-vehicle accident on State Road 38 west of Interstate 69 on Saturday, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

The Pendleton Police Department called the sheriff’s department crash investigation team at about 4:15 p.m. to assist with the crash.

A white SUV heading east appears to have been traveling along a curve when it left the road on the south side, Sheriff Scott Mellinger wrote in an email just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle traveled several hundred feet through grass until it hit a cement abutment and, according to witnesses, became airborne, according to Mellinger. The vehicle landed on its top and was on fire when emergency responders arrived.

Mellinger stated just before 9 p.m. that the Madison County coroner was expected to release the identification of the deceased later in the evening.
